One of our guinea pig's has died!

We found one of our 5 year old, male guinea pigs dead this morning.
His brother seems alright at the moment but we're worried how he's going to cope on his own.
We think he just died from old age as he didn't seem to be ill or anything.
RIP little piggy! Sad

Aw, shame. Do you live anywhere near a shelter where you could get a baby boar or a neutered sow to keep him company? Guineas like to have a friend.
Five is a fairly good age for a guinea. Sounds like he didn't suffer. Hope his brother is ok.

AW! That's 2 today on MNSad

SparkySparrow · 25/02/2012 17:14

:(

Hairtwiddler Unfortunately we don't have a shelter near us. He's an indoor GP so we're just giving him lots of cuddles and constantly talking to him. He's probably fed up to the back teeth of us already.
He's running around in the living room right now like he always does.
Dreading sorting out the fresh veg for him later as I won't have to do as much and there won't be the usual double squealing as I put it in!

Sad - sounds like it was out of the blue but probably old age as you said.

A 5 yo boar would be a hard match-up. If he's not neutered ,it'll have to be a baby boar. Or 2, otherwise you'll be in the same position when your GP dies. But if you put 2 young, virile boars in with an older chappie there might be fireworks when they hit the Terrible Teens (about 6 months)

TBH , I've let a surviving GP live out it's days, and they've been fine with human company. I introduced a female (we didn't know she was pg) to a mum&daughter pair and they didn't get on until the older mum died.

Your boy will be quiet for a while, but I presume he was in the cage with his brother? He'll know he's gone.

Unofficialpeacekeeper · 25/02/2012 21:11

Yes he did share a cage with his brother. As they were 2 boys living together we've decided to leave the surviving one to live out his days on his own.
We're keeping an eye on him but at the moment he seems ok.
We buried his brother today and one of my DS's asked if I could get some flowers to go on the grave when I went shopping so I bought a cheap small bunch of daffodils.

oh i am so sorry, ours are getting on now and i dread this. RIP little pig x

alemci · 25/02/2012 21:18

poor guineau pig but at least he lived to a good age. I reckon the other one will be fine on his own as long as he gets plenty of attention and cuddles.

our boy lives alone but inside at present.

Unofficialpeacekeeper · 25/02/2012 21:45

Forgot when I posted earlier to thank everybody for their kind thoughts!

The one who is still with us has always been the more confident of the two so in a way it is probably better that he is the one left. iyswim.
We think he will cope better on his own than his brother would have.
Lots more cuddles from now on!

Unofficialpeacekeeper - the bit about sorting the veg and only having to do half portions

That was something we noticed in our house (when I was a child I had lots of GPs over the years). 2 GPs make so much noise when the fridge opens and there's chopping. When we were down to our single sow out of 4 she never rattled the bars, she was a quiet soul, but followed us round like a little dog, waiting to go out in the garden.

Its when there are no GPs in the house that you realise how noisy they are.It took years for me to get used to opening the fridge without the resulting chorus.
We've got 2 boars now (in at night) and if I try to eat a sneaky bag of crisps they pipe up "We've got mouths"

Hope your little boy pig is okay today.

Unofficialpeacekeeper · 26/02/2012 13:45

Just asked OH and apparently there was none of the usual squealing when he put the veg in last night.

Little GP is running around in the living room as we speak and he's squealing as he runs around as though he trying to find his brother! Sad

Oh so sad. Maybe a cheer up - our Boy lost his brother aged 2.5 last month and even though he was the more timid of the two he has come out of himself a bit now and much happier to be stroked and cuddled (mainly if food involved).

Still can't believe how sad I was at the time - its at GP ffs! But the thought of him all lonely Sad

However he doesn't realise we are feeding him up in preparation for his big snip on Thursday and then GP wedding in 4 weeks time!

But agree your boy is a bit old for those types of shenanigans - I think he'll be fine when he realises he has first dibs at all food (sad but true its a big GP motivator!)
