Bunny 'hygiene' problem

My rabbits have always been very healthy until now, they are brother and sister, were rescued when tiny and are now almost nine. The male keeps getting a poo-ey bottom end even though I am now cleaning out the hutch even more often. He is the most docile rabbit you would ever meet and sits calmly in the kitchen sink with his bottom exposed while I wipe and soak the stuck on bits to get them off his fur. The female lives in the same hutch and has a very clean bottom so it must be something he is doing, or not doing.

I'm going to take him to the vet in half term but I wondered if anyone has any ideas. I'm almost scared to take him as they are so elderly now that I worry they will find something wrong and before I know it they will be PTS. Unreasonable, I know, as the vet wouldn't do that unless it was absolutely necessary.

Sometimes it can happen when they eat too much, is there a chance that he's eating a lot more than the other bunny? Some websites say it can happen in overweight rabbits too. I know it's not the same but ours started biting off fur in that area and the vet told us to use half the amount of pellets it said on the packet and a large handful of veg a day plus fresh hay every day the size of the rabbit. Hope this helps. Please don't worry too much about him, I'm sure he'll be fine! Let us know how you get on Smile
