Guinea pig has spikes coming out of penis

Hi we have a male guinea pig, When I picked him up today I noticed what looked like two teeth protruding from his penis, which is quite 'cauliflowery' I have never noticed these before. they look like two thin white spikes.

I have only found one other picture of this on a google search, and the 'answers' to that owners question didn't say anything. If you search up 'guinea pig penis spike' on google images there is a pic which is very similar to my guinea pigs problem.

Is this normal? I am thinking i will take him to the vet, but want to check if its normal as i don't know much about GP's

They are normal - DD noticed one of hers had them when he had a prolapsed penis and she had to clean it before she could push it back in.

Apparently they are penile styles (so she tells me Hmm) and are to do with mating and all males have them. You just don't often see the very tip of a guinea pig's penis.

Is it possible your boy has a prolapsed penis, which is why you can see them?

ohhhh Thank you! I am so relieved! It was protruding for a little while (20 mins or so) but then the spikes and the rest of the 'gathering' of cauliflowery pinkyness went back inside. I have been looking on line and i had no idea that you have to clean out their willies and bums regularly, I feel like such a terrible pet owner and frankly i am amazed he has survived thus far am off to do some research and cleaning of guinea's bum

TBH, unless they look dirty, their penis won't retract again or they are obviously impacted, DD leaves them to it.

She's not had any impactions (her boys are just over a year old so unlikely to get it) so hasn't had to deal with that.

She's also only had to clean the penis of 2 of her boys, one because of the prolapse and the other because he molested got a little friendly with one of the other boys and glued his penis out Hmm. She does check, usually when they have a bath, but they are never irritated or dirty.

I'm sure you're a great guinea pig owner!

Eeeeek- I didn't know this about boy guinea-pigs penises.Male cats have spikey penises, supposed to make the female cat ovulate. Maybe GPs have similar?

My only adult male GP years back died before he was 2 (he had a tough life, his mate rather viciously assaulted him Sad ) He did have impaction at the end of his life, I put it down to him not having the energy to pooh it out.

We are picking up our 2 boys from rescue on Saturday. Very excited!! I'll need to have a stern chat with them to make sure they don't try it on with each other.

Wellies were the 2 piggies littermates that molestedbonded together?

Some board do get a bit "cheesy" but not all of them. There is a technique for cleaning them which involves retracting the foreskin and using a very wet cotton wool ball or baby wipe to clean what's accumulated there. It's not alot of fun either for pig or human, but just something you have to do sometimes.

I looked after a pig who had a protruding foreskin - yes, a bit like a cauliflower. The actual penis wasn't prolapsed, but it did look rather funny and he was more prone to bladder infections, being low slung as he was!

Impaction generally only happens in older boars or boars who are ill. For example, I had quite a young one who at 2 years started to develop the problem, but it was linked to a heart condition that wasn't diagnosed until much, much later. Guinea pigs are very adept at hiding if anything is wrong.

I hope I don't get reincarnated as a guinea pig.

Lord The two weren't litter mates - DD bought 2 guinea pigs last year who were litter mates, then bought 3 more who weren't litter mates 4 months later. They were all living together without issue until 1 of the 3 hit puberty and became very aggressive so had to be removed.

When DD tried to reintroduce him to the others, she left them alone for 5 mins and returned to find the "outcast" had a sticky bum (Envy

We played one of those "guinea-pig noises" websites on Google .

GP1 -the bossy one- was quite alert, head up when we played the different noises, especially the squeaking (want food noises)

GP2- the quiet one- was completely non-plussed according to DH who was cuddling him until there was a recording of a male GP attracting the attention of a female. Then GP2 was very interested.
If he goes all Leslie Phillips "Well Hell-o , Ding Dong" I think GP1 might give him short shrift . (We've no females here)

OMG! I had no idea. We're looking to buy two guinea pigs for DD. Have now decided they will definitely be girls!

LordOfTheFlies · 13/11/2011 00:05

Aaah, boy GPs are lovely though Fortified.
I can forgive the mess, the marking and the threat of spiky bits Grin because I know we'll have no unplanned piglets.

LordOfTheFlies · 13/11/2011 00:09

BTW even buying 2 girls doesn't guarentee (sp) no piglets.

I got my first GP when I was 9 yo
I had 2 girls-so the petshop told me-but 1 was a boy-so we had accidental piglets

Later we bought a girl- she was pregnant when we bought her.
