Question about rabbits toilet habits - Sorry!

Hi,

We recently got a rabbit and she's cheeky but very lovely - she's has slotted into our family really well.

There is just one thing which is puzzling me... Hmm

I thought that most animals like to keep their sleeping area clean, but she seems to be using it as her toilet area and sleeping in there too!

Is this normal? Shall I put a litter tray in her hutch?

I am cleaning out her bed everyday and everywhere I've read says this only needs to be done once or twice a week - but it's gross! Am I being precious or should I just leave her to sleep in her own poo?!!!! Blush

I would get her litter trained asap. My sister has a large cage (2 story type) and in the house area (with the wooden door), she has a bed area (which bunny keeps for sleeping) and next to it, the littler tray that she uses all the time. The rest of the cage is free for her to roam around.

I've had rabbits all my life (except now) and they always pooed in the hideaway bit and perhaps the odd other corner and then slept somewhere else.

Mine poos in his "bedroom" too, but always in the corner, then he sleeps in the doorway IYSWIM. I think perhaps he thought it was an ensuite!

I bought a triangular litter tray thingy that slots into the toilet corner - much easier just to whip it out and empty it.

There is also a special type of poo they do at night, which is softer and not the usual little pellets. They generally eat this - apparently it's good for them. Hmm

You're supposed to leave a bit of poo I think in there so they can smell the place is there's Grin.

CointreauVersial - she doesn't seem to have a specific patch - it's just the whole bed area Grin @ ensuite!

vintageteacups - I wondered if it's because she likes to do her business in private. I think I will try a litter tray. Not sure how easy it will be to convert a 1 year old rabbit but will give it a go!

Thank for all your replies!

I litter trained my rabbit, she has a sleeping area, but she still likes to take naps in her litter tray... bunnies do have some odd habits.
