Do you ever take your guinea pigs for an MOT?

My two girls are coming up 5. They free range alot of the time but locked in at night. Handled regularly and seem healthy - shiney coats , no ticks etc... . The claws never seem long enough they need a cut and so never have so thnk wearing naturally when out and about and the teeth when i can get a look look a reasonable length too. I have never bathed them. Do any keepers ever take your gp for a vet check up? Im sure they are fine but im just conscious they are getting on a bit and am a bit overprotective.

A good way to keep an eye on their condition is to weigh them regularly. If they're maintaining their weight, there's unlikely to be much wrong with them, but a steady loss over a few weeks would indicate a check up is needed.

Thanks, i have never actually weighed them so might just do that, they seem to have fattened up with the lack of outdoor excersise over the cold snap tbh.

Get yourself a large lock and seal box and make holes in it. Best, easiest way to weigh your small furries. Make sure its big enough for the piggie and the scales.

You could also take them to the vets and weigh them. That way there is an ongoing record there just in case.

oh i will just sit them on my baking scales lol!

I have flat, digital scales. I put the kitchen diary on to them, and the pig perches on that. I then record the weights in the diary.

If the pig is very lively or uncooperative, best to do it at floor level, but ours just sit and ruminate.
