I can't find a big Guinea Pig hutch

Hi

I'm looking for a big guinea pig hutch - at least 10.5 sq ft.

Does anybody know where I could find one this size or bigger? All the usual shops/website sell quite small hutches.

i'd also like to limit the cost to circa £70.

Thanks in advance

Smile

i saw quite a largeone in the range tuther week, how many pigs is it for? Our is falling to bits and i could do with offering them so more space so will watch this thread Smile

How about a double height one? If you got a 5ftx2ft one which was on two levels that would be big enough wouldn't it? Or even a 4ftx2ft double one.

I've had a hutch from here before and it was good quality.

I got a second hand Forsham rabbit hutch on ebay - try searching rabbit hutches - they tend to be much bigger.

Saying that our two pigs sit in the closed bit all bloody day anyway...not sure why we bothered! Guilt I think Grin

Thanks - it's for 3 pigs. Will look at all the places mentioned and report back.

I know what you mean, our 3 always seem to be in their house at the end, but I recently read that they're happier with more space - so have been searching for a bigger hutch.

i could do with one having the closed bit at the other end otherwise when i have the ramp up for them to tootle out if one wants to stay in the little igloo thing they get a bit chilly as thats the main door too.

I keep our guineas in a C and C cage.(cube and corroplast) It is a home made cage using mesh grids so it can be any shape size you like depending on how many grids you have. It would only be suitable for indoor use. The mesh grids come from mesh cube storage unit arrangements. Some people use corroplast for the flooring but I use lino.

If you look on the forum "rodents with attitude" there is a section on C and C cages with photographs. It is in the discussion forum part under housing.

You are right about the size. The more space they have the happier guineas are. Our cage is 6ft by 3 ft and houses two guineas.

See, the weird thing is, ours LOVED it when they had the run of our conservatory/junk room. It was obv not ideal long term but for a week or two they were free range, hiding under all the stuff, running about like loons.

But in the hutch they sit and doze and don't do much at all. Maybe it is too cold for them atm? I was thinking of converting the playhouse actually, so they have a very warm enclosed run out there. Not sure if that would work.

kingprawn I wondered about a C & C one, but ours are kept in an outhouse in the winter and outside in the summer, so don't think it would work.

I've seen a 6ft by 2ft one in the range but its £209 - ouch!

Good idea about using a playhouse, we've a little shed the kids use - maybe we could convert that.

Would you be willing to make one? We made our 2 storey cage, it's huge, houses 4 guinea pigs on top and 2 rabbits underneath.

All the materials cost around £50, we put wheels on ours to be able to move it for easy cleaning, it's in our living room.

I would imagine it would be quite easy to make it well insulated too.

Good luck, it's very frustrating that most of the cages you can buy are so small!

mercibucket · 17/03/2011 18:06

at that budget i think you're going to have to make one tbh. the place I bought from used to make them to order as well but nowhere near that budget. how aobut a large run (two joined together) for outside and for inside in winter do a c and c cage?

tazmosis · 18/03/2011 20:19

Pigpog how did you make it? Are you particularly handy or trained? I don't think I'd know where to start!

Christ no not at all! I started off just drawing what I wanted, and measured the space we had.

The floors are just MDF, screwed to the legs with L shaped brackets. The sides are wooden frames (stapled together) with chicken wire stapled on, then screwed on to the legs.

After that we put linoleum on the floors to make them easy to clean. The rabbits are on sisal carpet, and use a cat litter tray, the guinea pigs are on cloth nappies and fleece. Each front side is a hinged, lockable door, to aid cleaning and to stop the kids getting in!

There's a pic on my profile. We're really proud of it, it was the first time we'd made anything and we think it looks really good.

Have a look here for inspiration. There's also the C+C cages there. We wanted to do that but couldn't get the stuff so used wood instead.

Would love to hear what you decide, and see photos of anything you make!
