Anyone else put their Guinea Pigs back outside?

Mine came in before the snow came but I think they are struggling with being in the cage. It is the biggest one we could get but they have less room to run about in. Outside is still very wet and muddy so they can't play out but they have more space in their hutch.

mine our outside - not really that cold around here now.

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 12:56

didididi, what do you do about them having a run around when the grass is wet?

Mine is in the garden run today eating grass Smile. I've packed the hutch full of fresh straw so she has a cosy shelter to snuggle in.

She'll be back in later and will stay in the house overnight until April, she's widowed and quite old so I spoil her.

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 13:16

Can they play on wet grass if they are going back into a lovely cosy bed? I thought they didn't cope well with getting wet.

It hasn't seem to have done any of mine any harm. They often go in the garden then come back into a centrally heated house (or vice versa) and they haven't keeled over yet.

When I was younger it used to worry me, but I've kept the little things for nearly 30 years, I think they're more robust than we give them credit for.

Meglet · 15/01/2011 13:38

Don't burst with excitement but I have put a photo of the run on my profile. (yes, I am that bored today Grin).

IAmReallyFabNow · 15/01/2011 14:10

lol i was thiking how can she tell thats a tortoise it looks like a pile of mud!! Anyway mine have been tucked sheltered inthere hutch in a shed/playhouse and had free rein of the garden again for weeks now through the day. I am considering taking them out of the play house now as it appears warmer and because they are shitting all over it and i keep banging my head when i clean them out Grin

DollyPantsJollyPants · 17/01/2011 17:26

I'm new to keeping piggies so do you think my baby ones could go out now?

I do kind of like them in the house, but the hutch is taking up a LOT of room. I've got one of those heat pads ready for the day they can go outside.

I don't want to kill them off, we've only had them a month!

goodmanners · 17/01/2011 17:56

i wouldnt put babies out just yet until frosts have stopped, mine are 3/4 and mostly spend there days outside i have just been specially nice and let them have shelter in the snow and -10 tempertures.

DollyPantsJollyPants · 17/01/2011 21:08

ok I'll let them stay for a while then!

You say yours have the run of the garden Goodmanners, is is all sealed off then? I don't think we'd find ours again if I let them out in the garden!

Fennel · 17/01/2011 21:10

Yes, I've plonked ours back outside since Friday, we don't have a great indoor hutch or place to put them inside. I am being careful about checking up on their bedding etc. I'll bring them back in if we get another cold spell. They seem quite happy actually, despite lots of rain.

goodmanners · 18/01/2011 10:07

Garden is all sealed yes, i open hutch on morning and they jolly around in it all day trimming the lawn for dh, i go out at tea time and rattle the food bag and they rush bag in the hutch to feed so i lovk them down for the night. We are lucky we have no foxes are nasties that come about in the day. Teh rmoe theye are out the less the hutch needs cleaning as well as they poo elsewhere Smile

goodmanners · 18/01/2011 10:08

my hutch actually fell to bits when i dragged it accross the garden so im looking for a nice longer one on one level still anyone seen any bargains?

IAmReallyFabNow · 18/01/2011 13:40

I was all set to put mine back in their hutch yesterday but it rained all day so they are still in. Grin.

Mine have been out all winter so far. They have 13.5tog duvet and waterproof cover over their hutches at night and even on the coldest nights their waterbottles never freeze so it obviously doesn't get that cold under there.
I do fret about them as there simply is NO room in the house for them and the garage would be so damp and dark that I think they are better where they are. They have thick layer of shavings plus mountain of hay stuffed in their bedroom. This is their second winter out there, and they seem fine.

Grin
miku · 22/01/2011 10:59

mine have been out all winter too,Samjones. They are fine and snuggly, bubblewrapped, and waterproofed, and newspapered!!!they are all over a year old, and have very fluffy coats.
Recently its been warm enough tp put them on the grass for a few hours, before going back to warm, clean hutches.(ive got 3 pairs).

goodmanners · 25/01/2011 21:06

mine have gone back outside last friday , just big hessian sacking blanket over them on a night and extra hay, seem happy enough.
