How much bruxing is too much?

My two rats are very noisy. They make a continuous burbling noise almost like pigeons cooing very quietly most of the time. Even eating. It's a nice noise and I always assumed it's because they are happy or just chatting away. But it really is quite loud. I've never had any rats that made this much noise and even these 2 only started when we moved them into their current position in our new house.

Is there any chance it's a symptom of anything wrong? I know that rats are prone to respiratory problems and it's just possible that the noise could be a sort of wheeze.

No symptoms of illness at all otherwise.

Bruxxing is chattering noise, not cooing.
Yes it does sound a bit like a wheeze.
What kind of bedding are they on?

Ormirian · 23/11/2010 14:43

They have fabric scraps as bedding. No straw or sawdust.

It is a kind of chattering but low-level and fluctuating so that it sounds like pigeons. And it stops from time to time - when you get them out of the cage often. Wouldn't a wheeze be fairly continuous.

Only thing I wondered if would it be a problem if their cage was warmer than before? It might be.

Wheezing is on-off in rhythm with their breathing, so it doesn't sound quite like that (I have a wheezy mouse at the moment).
Rats are prone to lung disease when they get much older, no matter what they bed on,anyway.

You could ask on FancyRats, they are complete Rat freaks there!

Thanks ragged.

No noise at all this evening.

I had a quick look on fancy rats earlier but I'm not sure I can explain things well enough to make it clear.

DD wants me to take them to the vets - will have to try and locate a good rat-friendly one as mine if great with the mogs but doesn't seem to have much of an idea with rats.

You could record it and link to a sound file somewhere...?
Or just Utube with good sound quality.

I could try Grin I am not good at technology (which is sad as I make my living from computers). But I can rope DS1 in.
