Ive scoured the net to absolutly no avail, its the same 5 lines copied and pasted everywhere, does anyone on here have any experience with harvest mice as pets??

We bought two this morning, have set up the tank using all the snipits of info we have gathered, happy with that, foods fine etc. But they dont seem to be getting on, the slightly larger one seems to agressivly humping the slightly smaller one, is this normal pecking order stuff? Do they need to be in larger groups than pairs perhaps?

Any info will be very much appreciated thanks.

God, where did you buy them from can't the people who sold them to you offer advice? They are very cute but wild animals - not sure it is fair to keep them as pets tbh. They may need quite specalist care your best bet would be the mamal section at your local zoo. A keeper there should be able to offer advice.

Agree with Fuchzia. Are you in the UK? (Asking as I have never known anyone to have them as pets here unless they have been rescued).

Try registering on UK Animal Rights Yahoo Group and posting for advice (only takes a minute and populated by very knowledgable people). Also ring/email Shepreth Wildlife Park and/or a similar organisation and speak too to your vet in the morning.

They are rising in popularity as pets, they are under conservation also as they are declining in the wild. Obviously we have reasearched them in depth to sort out environment and feeding them etc, reasearching behaviour has proved harder unfortunatly, thats why i would like to talk to a fellow owner, to compare notes so to speak. Im in cotact with breeders, but these breeders mainly breed and release in to the wild so arent great on the behaviour side of things past mating and infantcy. And of course they keep large mix sexed groups for breeding so cant advise on my issues. I'll keep trying to find someone

Have you tried all these links?

Blimey!

Thank YOU for teaching me more.

I do like rodents but sadly my cats have a different sort of interest in them!

BabyDubsEverywhere · 01/08/2010 22:43

They are beautiful creatures val I'd love to breed them but you need four enclosures and my livingroom won't stretch to that hehe. They are hunted by everything on the wild, even toads! But the biggest threat is us asusual, we make it too tidy and they don't have hedgerows to live in anymore, they only live for about 5 months inthe wild but unto 4 yes in captivity I'll shut up now its boring lol but yes, go harvest mice!!!

Oh fantastic!

Not quite the same-we have 3 dwarf hamsters.
They are sisters, got them young from an animal home.

They are supposed to be OK living together, but we have ended up with them all separate due to fighting!

All I can say is is one squeaking as if it is scared/hurt?
Is there blood?

Also, once separated, hammies can´t then be put back together.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 02/08/2010 09:37

This is what has me worried you see, we had two russian dwarfs last year, in a massive cage, and they went about hunting each other, one was squeeking quite a bit, so we took one back to the shop in the end as didnt have an extra cage at the time, (have since adopted more but thats another story hehe) So this squeeking the little one was doing last night worried me a little. So little is known on behaviour of these little things as they simply dont live very long in the wild to be observed.

No blood or squaring up to each other which sometimes happens with rodents though. They actually seem okay today, they arent seperating themselves which is good, im hoping its just jostling for top dog
