Hi everyone,

first post on here and I can’t even believe I’m saying this because it’s so tragic.

im really addicted to going on my phone constantly and I don’t want my son to feel neglected. He’s 10 months old and I really struggle to be present and it makes me feel so guilty and sad. I know some people will look at this post and be like - just put your phone away or use an app, I’ve tried. It’s not working.

I have anxiety, I doom scroll to distract but I want to know if this is a common problem, any tips welcomed?

I got rid of all my social media apps and I blocked websites on my phone. It did help.

it’s so hard though, we all automatically reach for our phones when we sit down. Scrolling is incredibly addictive.

Following as I too would love to reduce my phone usage! Feel like it's my only escape from DCs sometimes though Confused

Me too I think everyone is. Don’t be so harsh on yourself. I actually turn mine off sometimes. Then if I go to pick it up by habit I can’t then start scrolling as it’s OFF. It gives me enough time to think to just put it back in my pocket

I have been making a real effort this year to cut my time down. I have stopped posting on social media at all which is big progress for me.

other things that have helped - purposely leaving my phone upstairs, my watch will tell me if someone is urgently trying to get hold of me.

when I am sat relaxing making sure I have a book/cross stitch or something to hand. I know I get bored easily and I tend to scroll to counter that so if I have something else to do I’m less likely to scroll.

I would say most adults are. I’m mid 50’s, so way past the age where I would be hooked on social media interacting with friends etc.. but I’m an addicted researcher. I have noticed that say, only 10 years ago, I would be able to sit and watch TV and relax. Now, my hand reaches for my phone within 10 minutes of sitting on the sofa, and if it’s not there, I simply can’t settle. As soon as adverts come on I’m bored, so start scrolling, and the neves/muscles in my shoulder blade absolutely flame with irritation from my (minor?) scrolling. I wish I could go back to my old Nokia, or Samsung clamshell, but sadly owning a business means it’s not possible. And don’t even mention concentration. I feel like I have none. I also feel like my brain is constantly multi tasking. It can’t be healthy.

I feel the same way.

I’m working from home, for myself and it’s really hard to stay away from my phone, especially as I need it for referencing and admin all the time.
