Slot machines in Wetherspoons

Hi my son witnessed a young woman lose all her wages (about £300) in a slot machine in a Wetherspoons pub yesterday. He tried to talk her out of feeding the machine more money but she said she was addicted and took no notice. Obviously staff are too busy to notice but it just seems wrong to have these machines in pubs that attract the less well off and most vulnerable.

YANBU! It’s a bit shocking to me that Wetherspoons have slot machines. I mean I suppose it’s to be expected but really how low can you go. Quite sad the extent of drinking & gambling in the UK. We rarely watch UK tv but when we do we always are shocked at how many adverts are for gambling. It’s best to stay well well away.

Do you think they should ban slot machines in pubs because some people have a gambling addiction?

Do you also think pubs should be banned from selling alcohol because some people are alcoholics?

Or that supermarkets should be banned from selling junk food because some people have eating disorders?

I feel bad for the lady, my best friend in my twenties was like this. Eventually I stopped going out with her to places where there would be slot machines as I'd end up sat on my own all night.

But blanket bans on things because some people are addicted seems a bit of an overreaction.

The government makes too much money out of gambling for them to do anything I think

I think op is just showing empathy to a woman in a difficult situation and wondering out loud if anything can or should be done. I agree with op it must have been hard for your son to see
