before i found out i was pregnant i was smoking a lot of weed (unknown to the fact i was pregnant as this was a surprise) i stopped as soon as i found out but i have a appointment with my midwife tomorrow and i am worried about drug testing, i don't want to start my pregnancy journey on the wrong foot so i want to know what to expect, will i be drug tested, do i need to tell my midwife about this? i only ask as a friend of mine has had a awful midwife who has made her look like she is the worst mam ever for smoking at the start of her pregnancy. i am only a young man and really nervous and really don't know what to expect. i'm 10 weeks and my midwife is going to be doing tests for stickle cell anaemia, HIV and hepatitis. that's all they said on the phone but any more information on what to expect tomorrow would be much appreciated, just to emphasise the fact that i am NOT still smoking this at all! TIA x

I can’t remember if they ask you specifically about illegal drugs but happily you’re in a position where if they ask you, you can honestly say no you don’t do any. From memory they would be asking about stuff you might be doing now eg drinking or smoking. Not what you might have done in the past.

You will not be drug tested at a standard midwife appointment. Nobody will randomly drug test you, you will always have been told at some point prior that it might happen.

Definitely disclose it when they ask, they will know you're a recent smoker anyway from the CO² breathalyser tests, so far better to be honest about it and not risk it coming up on a later blood/urine test and making it look worse. Also means in the unlikely event that it has affected your pregnancy, it could help them figure out what's going on. The important thing is now you know you're pregnant you've stopped. Although you can't guarantee to get a non-judgy midwife, they're there to support you and your baby. It likely will be a feature of your appointments throughout, offers of referral to quit programs etc, but honestly, it's been 20 years since I smoked weed and 10 since I had a cigarette and I still got the info packs on my first appointment, so don't necessarily read too much into it if you're feeling judged! Congratulations on your pregnancy!
