Stopping and starting opiates

Someone I've been quite close to on and off has suddenly started taking opiates again after stopping them in January. He attempted suicide last year and he suffers from agonising back pain. He's awful on them. When he takes a full dose he sleeps. His moods change. He sometimes reacts to them. He doesn't eat and I found him awful on them. We've had a few bumps along the way and it's always been his snapping and going off to sulk.

He's got back in touch with me this weekend after nearly three weeks of no contact. I arranged to call him last night but he didn't answer. I went to sleep and woke up at midnight with no message. So I messaged him and requested he communicates something when he saw this. So at 5am he messages to apologize and say he had started taking opiates again and had slept loads and told me he still wasn't getting on with them.

I am going to call him to see how he is later on this morning. But to be honest I'm not sure why I'm calling him as i don't want to be a part of this worry again.

I am concerned about the fact he's gone back on these. How dangerous are they? The Dr prescribed 5mg twice a day. But he is so inconsistent with them. I fear he will end up overdosing or something.

Has anyone got any knowledge on these? I'm so disappointed he's gone back on them.

Op unfortunately no one can stop addicts from using.
There’s a saying in al anon
You didn’t cause it
You can’t control it
You can’t cure it.

I’m sorry you are going through this, addiction is a cruel disease not least because of the pain it causes the friends and family members of the addict.
