Codeine addiction

I am/was? addicted to huge amounts of codeine (plain, not with paracetamol). I was taking about 400-450mg a day, all in one go, to get high, and sometimes these doses twice a day. I’ve been tapering off and now only take between 15-30mg a day. It started as a great way to numb the physical pain from a disability and then it became w way to feel good and then it became an inability to survive the day without it. I’m proud of how far I’ve come now but would appreciate support if anyone is around. Cheers

That sounds like good news! I had a lot of energy at the weekend. I'm in my 5 week now.

Nice one Ash, how are you feeling now? Today I felt really anxious but also had energy so I got through it. I do wonder if I’ll ever be at a point where I can have a healthy relationship with it, paracetamol isn’t enough for the pain I get from my disability and I can’t have NSAIDs like ibuprofen/naproxen etc, I’m on amytriptaline which is supposed to help but it doesn’t! So occasionally I need a stronger pain killer. To be able to use codeine in a NORMAL dose, sparingly, as opposed to taking daft amounts daily, would be lovely.

Hi guys don’t know if any of you are still here. I’ve been taking up 14 x 30mgs and are now cutting down, had 30mg only for the last two days and tomorrow will be nothing. Already having restless legs, aches, lethargy. I’ve done the withdrawal before so know this is the usual symptoms. I’ve started taking a multi vitamin but does any one have any tips for dealing with the withdrawal? Especially the disturbed sleep, thanks!

Hi I’m here! Maybe some Kalms sleep? Magnesium for restless legs. Immodium for loose bowels.

Did you manage to keep off it?

I realise this is a very old thread, just wonders if you guys managed to stay off it? I've just relapsed for the first time... feeling like such an idiot

Went back onto them. I started tapering over the last few months and seemed fine on 2 a day but took 8 yesterday because felt ill and now today I ache.

I have 2 left. I have taken none today and plan not to take the last two or buy anymore.

I have never taken more than the recommended does so I need to stop being a wimp. I am in a better position than I was last year so maybe a very slow decline will finally work.

Been over 24 hours and not too bad.

MadamVastra · 05/03/2024 13:14

Well done pp they really are a menace! Best of luck 😊

AshOakRowan · 05/03/2024 20:30

Last 24 hours been OK too. I'm wondering whether it will get worse now I'm 48 hours in? It's more the mental issue rather than physical.
