Bikini wax - what's the difference between "strip" and "hot"?!

I'm booked in for a brazilian bikini wax next Thursday and the last one I had was 8 years ago. She asked me if I wanted a "strip" wax, which uses hot (temperature) wax, or a "hot" wax which is apparently different.

I was too busy doing this at the price to take much notice of her explanation about which was which - can anyone help? The "hot" wax is slightly more expensive, but I think it's a less painful option. I think.

Can anyone shed more light?

Hot is much less painful in my experience. Basically and thy they paste on a quite thick layer of wax, which is quite hot. It then opens the pores and the wax quickly sets and the therapist picks at a corner of the wax and pulls it off. Sounds weird but I MUCH prefer it!

Thanks happyland! Ah right, I had actually read about that method but I wasn't sure that was what she meant. That sounds good! Is it any more effective in terms of hair removal/regrowth or is it the same?

yes yes - much better at removing tough pubic hair, no sticky residue, hurts less and takes ages to grow back - I would never have a brazilian without it now!

oooh....I've had hot wax and hated it.

Not helped by the fact the therapist got my pubes stuck to my pants with the wax and it was all a big sticky mess and took ages to painfully unpick it all.(TMI)

The moral of the story? Never go to a trainee to get a bikini wax

( still traumatised)

Kind of depends on whether you like to rip plasters off all in one go or pick them off gradually I guess.

CheeeseOnToast · 08/07/2010 21:08

Ooh thanks everyone. Lobyd that sounds horrible! I picked the most experienced waxist (waxer?!) there and have three recommendations that she's good, so hopefully I won't have such problems. I was worried because the last time I had a normal wax I got ingrown hairs and bruising, which totally put me off. But I want to try and go regularly and get the hair a bit finer.

Moomin yep I did notice annoying waxy bits left over last time that picked up fibres from my jeans and were a nightmare to clean up. Bleugh.

I also read a story in some trashy mag about a waxist who ripped off a poor woman's labial skin by mistake, so I think the gentler hot wax version will go some way to dampening fears that'll happen to me. I think it was Pick Me Up or something equally trashy, so it's probably total rubbish. But the thought!

So, I think I'll go for the 'hot' version. Thanks ladies

I would second (third?) hot wax, would never have my waxing done again using strip wax. Much less painful and much less in the way of ingrowing hair, although you still need to exfoliate and I use InGrow Go to make sure I don't get any if I am going on holiday etc.

Hot Wax I had it done the for the first time 3 weeks ago and its great still looks as good as when it was done.
It didnt hurt me would highly recommend.

FakePlasticTrees · 08/07/2010 22:11

oh, hot wax is better! It hurts a bit more at the time, but IMO you don't get that throbbing pain for ages afterwards. I think it's supposed to be kinder to the skin.

And you get better results (less having to go over the same area again and again to get all the hairs).

oh and re the price, if someone is going at my bits with hot wax, i don't want it to be 'bargain basement' pricing...
