HELP! Threw out everything that didn't fit properly and now I have no clothes!

Help, help, HELP! I need a new wardrobe and FAST. And, what?s more, I need it on a tight budget and I need it delivered (have 2 month old and 20 month old plus have to work to pay for said new wardrobe, so relaxing shopping trip is not an option). I am appealing to all you clever, clued up MNers to point me in the right direction, for which you will certainly be rewarded with copious karma points.

Basically my body changed considerably after DC1. I got pregnant again when DC1 was 9 months old so not enough of a gap in between to really find out what suits me (other than maternity clothes ).

Body shape ? I am 5? 6? and mostly legs! I am a size 10 bottom and 12 top. I have broad shoulders and back and am very short waisted (i.e. by bottom rib is level with the top of my hips). I am also long in the rise. I carry fat on my back and, to a lesser extent, on my belly. My tummy is fairly flat but still quite flabby IYKWIM. I would usually be an A/B cup but am bfing so am a C/D. On the positive side I have long thin legs and nice ankles. My arms are pretty good too, although I do carry a little fat on the very, very top. My biggest problem with my arms is I have keratosis pilaris (that annoying red ?spotty? skin condition) at the very top so don?t like to wear anything that draws attention to it.

Tops ? I can?t wear spaghetti straps or anything that emphasises broadness of my shoulders and back. Due to bfing and being short waisted I am basically boobs then hips at the moment (I do wear decent well-fitted bras ? but can?t wear underwired at the moment due to being prone to mastitis). I also need boob access for feeding ? so tops that I can easily pull up or down. I do own a strapless nursing bra if that helps.

Bottoms ? I look fabulous in skinny fit jeans and leggings (if I do say so myself ) ? although I find it really hard to get trouser and jeans that fit well around at the top. Typically low cut works best, although this does tend to create an unattractive fat roll when I sit down which I need to cover with loose fit tops. Trousers cut to fit on the waist or above the waist only do up if I buy a size up - in which case they sag terribly around my bum and thighs. It?s easier to get the fit with leggings so no fat rolls and I don?t mind wearing slightly tighter tops/dresses over them.

Colours ? I can?t wear ?washed out? colours like grey, pastels and beige. Warm, bright colours like bottle green seem to work best.
I like clothes that are stylish and flattering. They also need to be fairly practical for running about after a toddler and bfing baby (e.g. I don?t want to be re-adjusting belts etc every 5 mins).

I have been searching the internet for 3 nights in a row now and only managed to order 2 tops (which will probably end up being sent back ). Any help/pointers/commiserations warmly welcomed?

Sorry about all the ?'s - I cut & pasted most of this post from Word and I think it converted all the apostrophes to question marks!

You sound like one of Gok's "top heavy" shapes as your shoulders are wider than your hips?

But if this is true then skinnies and leggings would not look good as you would need a flare leg to balance your shoulders...so I am confused!!! Can you tell us if your shoulders are wider than your hips?

Igglybuff · 05/07/2010 18:23

What shops have you looked at already and ruled out?

neverquitesure · 05/07/2010 18:39

Hi Bobbalina - just consulted my mirror and my shoulders and hips look the same width. Kind of picture a house brick with legs and boobs and that's me. I think leggings and skinnies work because I team them with tunic type tops that hide everything down to bum level.

Igglybuff - I used to love TopShop clothes but can't find much (except their excellent jeans) that works on my at present. I miss the bubble hem craze as they tended to look ok on me (I think!). I have explored ASOS, Next, TopShop, Mamaway (nursing clothes) and others (mind gone blank!) online.

Sorry about rush post & typos - DC2 due her bath!! Back later...

Another thought - perhaps my shoulders and back only seem so broad because of my lack of waist. Ok, bath ready now...

OK so you are not "top heavy"!!

I think that means that you are "straight up and down" so one of your missions is to define your waist with what you wear and "create curves"

neverquitesure · 05/07/2010 20:11

Right, kids are bathed and in bed (well, one is in bed, one is happily attached to boob).

So this is the sort of thing that, worn with skinny jeans, seems to suit my body shape (I have it in blue, the colour is not perfect but it's ok - you may have to look through the thumbnails to see a pic of how it looks when worn as a non-maternity top).

this outfit is another example of the sort of thing that I think might suit, but sadly I find grey unflattering and I would find it hard to bf in that particular top.

This shaped top is the sort of thing I would have worn when smaller boobed (although, again, prob not in that colour) but worry it wouldn't work so well with larger boobs.

Just seen your post Bobbalina. I would love to define curves but find belts look a bit daft as I'm so very short waisted.

PS. I found this article had some quite useful advice on being short waisted.

Problem is, when I combine it with my colour requirements, bf requirements and other body shape considerations I am left with virtually nothing to choose from.

Oh it's so depressing!

Agree belts are bad!

I am thinking fitted shirts or jackets to get some waist definition. How old are you? 20's or 30's?

WhatsWrongWithYou · 06/07/2010 08:17

I was going to suggest what that article said re belts: wear them low-slung rather than waist-cinching.
The best shape for this are those long curved ones.
I've seen this book highly recommended on here - gets good reviews too.

neverquitesure · 06/07/2010 09:13

Thanks for the suggestions!

Bobbalina - I'm 30 (but shhhh - don't tell )

WhatsWrongWithYou - Low slung belts can look good on me and help with redefining my proportions, but they ride up at the back when I move (as if they are trying to find my natural waist). This was ok pre-children but no good now I'm bending down to toddler/carrying baby/etc all day as I'm constantly readjusting it. The book looks brilliant - may have to invest in that one!

Spent another 2 hours online clothes shopping last night but no luck .

Right. I have taken the drastic measure of posting a photo of myself as my profile pic and starting a new thread in the hope that some of you good ladies can help me!

Thank you
