Can anyone explain Stepford maxi dresses to me

They are everywhere. What I want to know is this: a few fashy people say that this summer people should wear long tiered flowery dresses with what frankly look like tit bags on the top half, and a whole lot of people who absolutely, utterly, one hundred per cent should not be wearing them, rush out and buy them and then...go out in public whilst wearing them.

What is it about? Why do people think "fashion" excuses what the mirror plainly tells them?

Disclaimer - I don't care that they do, good luck to them etc, I just want to understand what they are thinking.

Smock tops are good if you actually are pregnant but not telling anyone yet. People assume that you only look pregnant because everyone looks pregnant in a smock top.

Could it be because its a free country
& you might not look perfect but it covers a few bits and bobs.
But..... I have always agreed with my Dad Why oh Why does any woman fat or thin wear legging without covering their tums & bums I don't think it makes anyone look even okay, its not hiding anything (unlike lovely maxi-dress) Not even Angelina looks good in just leggings and a skimpy t-shirt. With a shirt over the top and boots then okay knock your self out

no commemts on racer back vests with bra straps and muffin shoulder blades podging out at the pits???

I am fat not a size 8, and my maxi dress looks fab with a denim jacket over the top.

Not so great without it though...

Now Hully - maxis can look lovely.

Did you wear a very plain blue dress to the concert?

I do prefer a slinky maxi in jersey personally but pretty tiered ones can look lovely.

Be under no illusion, Hully- we are all slaves to fashion.

We just stick to different rules...

i agree with op in the fact that they are EVERYWHERE now like those awful gypsy skirts two years back.

true fashion followers wore them last year

usualsuspect · 01/07/2010 20:41

They look ridiculous ...I wore them first time round tho [old]

lizandlulu · 01/07/2010 21:08

i am on the look out for a maxi dress, but being a size 18 and 5 ft 4 i will not just buy any and am looking for the right one, i think they can look lovely, but has to be the right dress. personally think anyone, fat thin whatever, who wears one that actually touches the floor and drags look awful. would never wear t shirt under one tho

Hullygully · 01/07/2010 21:10

yy re racer vests, but round where I live they are at the sartorially elegant end of the scale...

Tethers - I am a slave only to blue
