Semi permanent hairdye - golden not red result

I am a brunette, in the winter fairly dark brown hair, in the summer if I spend time outside it goes to a lighter brown.
I have always wanted to find a semi permanent hairdye which will give me a golden or yellow shade highlight NOT red or alburn or copper shades. I don't like any kind of red tint. Can anyone recommend any semi permanent hair dye (make and shade) which might do this or is it the case that if your base natural colour is quite dark then any lightening will automatically look a red shade rather than a golden shade?
I have tried Castings Praline which someone recommended and the result is almost there although it does seem to darken my hair a bit (I want to go lighter if anything with golden highlights) and in some but not all lights I still detect a hint of red. Any ideas or do I have to go to a salon and have the whole works (base colour lightened etc etc)

From what I understand here you are basically looking for some highlights to 'lift' the colour of your hair.

This is pretty easy to get wrong on your own so I would visit a hairdresser- tell them that you want honey toned highlights not red or plum shades. The first lot might not make a huge impact (unless you want to go OTT and have that stripey look) but if you get your highlights done every month then it should lift the overall look of your hair.

That's the only way I can think of without you having to have the base colour lightened etc etc which is basically going to strip your hair and leave it dry and lifeless.
