Greasy, fine, limp, bleh hair anyone?

I have just about given up trying to work out what the hell I can try on my greasy, fine, limp hair. Yes - Batiste Brunette is good for a next day freshen-up if you're not going too far but generally I would have to wash it every day. I swear I have tried every shampoo in Tescos and Boots.
Anyway to get to the point, I have started washing my hair with baking soda and I think it's brilliant! But was wondering if anyone out there can tell me if I am totally wrecking my hair? Is it all going to fall out if I continue with this madness? Seriously though, my hair is much fuller and needs washed less. I only use it once a week and the rest of the time I use shampoo but I can really see I difference when I've used it.

good tip - thanks!
I'm sure it'll be fine for your hair

Thats interesting. How much do you use and how do you do it. Cant imagine it doing any damage.

A good heaped tablespoon, probably 2 if you have long hair and mix it with enough water to make a thick paste. Then just dump it on your wet hair and massage all over your hair and rinse well. It feels a bit wierd and gritty, but it has no smell. I was a bit concerned it might strip the colour out of coloured hair - but I haven't noticed a difference in my hair, which hasn't been it's original colour since I was 13!

watchingh with interest. i have to wash mine every day.

As long as you are diluting it, use conditioner and don't use it every day you should be fine.
When I was at college we did a test with baking soda on hair with and without conditioner, under the microscope without conditioner was kinda scary. It's not something I use myself as my scalp is so sensitive but if it's working keep going.

MrsAMoose · 29/06/2010 17:59

Eek!! I haven't been using any conditioner because it just makes my hair so heavy and lank. What was so scary about it under the microscope?? Oh God... it really is going to fall out isn't it?? And when you say "diluting it" do you mean adding water or something else?

Oh God, I'm always scaring people!
It won't fall out, it's just because baking soda is so rough on hair it can wreck the hair shaft.
Under the microscope the hair looks wirey and broken. By diluting, I do mean with water.
Conditioner shouldn't make your hair lank if it's only on the ends, or you could try a spray leave in conditioner. It's really important because your hairs natural PH is between 4.5-5.5 and baking sodas PH is about 8-9, you need conditioner to bring the PH level back down.
Remember baking soda is usually used to remove hard dirt on pots or frying pans, your hair is neither of the above.

Oh... okay, phew! Get you with the PH levels and science bit!!!
Thank you ShesEverSoFamous - you are talking sense and I will cut back on the baking soda and start using a conditioner. I had a niggling feeling that if this was such a brilliant idea then shampoo companies would have already put baking soda in shampoo!
