why is it whenever i think - "ok - ill try that" - (whatever "that" may be) that when i google "it" (whatever it may be) there is always an overwhelming array of "it" to choose from?

i have decided to try Fake Bake self tan. so i have a google and there are gazillions of em, original, mouse, airbrush, gradual for fair skin....

so, im very pasty, with uneven blotchy skin and im crap with self tan - which one!?!!

I am also pasty and blotchy. Have used most fake bake stuff.

You need fake bake fair.

Not mousse- thats for ppl who are v experienced! not the extreme stuff either unless you want to be terracotta.

Shaz10 · 27/06/2010 21:45

I'm watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Just a hint...

glitterkitty · 27/06/2010 21:47

Dont forget- exfoliate in morning.Moisturise dry bits (feet, elbows, knees).

Apply in evening. Use the gloves!

Walk about in buff for 1 hour so it dries. Try not to sweat.

Go to bed. Sheets will not get marked.

In morning shower and use exfoliating scrub mitt (of a foot file thing) on any streaks.

Remember swimming in chlorine will fade it. No pools!

ThatVikRinA22 · 27/06/2010 22:07

fake bake fair? is that the one thats a gradual tan or is it a colour?

sorry - fake bake virgin and i need a link! please!

i have trouble with St Tropez Everyday moisturising self tan if thats a clue to how crap i am at this!

OP posts:
glitterkitty · 28/06/2010 21:22

its a fake tan- you apply it once and it appears after few hrs and stays on for week or so?

Google it- its available in debenhams etc too!

this one!

CerealOffender · 28/06/2010 22:06

i use the st morritz one from semi-chem. v. cheap. i apply with a mitt. it looks ok but i only do a v. light coat. i don't moisturise just exfoliate

ThatVikRinA22 · 28/06/2010 22:14

thankyou glitterkitty!

i was toying with the original but being such a pasty creature i did wonder if i would end up looking like id been tangoed...

so the fair one - i take it its like a moisturiser with hint of tan type thing?

OP posts:
glitterkitty · 28/06/2010 22:17

Well, im pasty white- when I apply it I look lightly tanned. Any more would def be tango! If its not dark enough you can always reapply the next day- but if your fair you are better to go less rather than more IYSWIM otherwise its a bit katie price!

Fake tan is v tricky business...

ThatVikRinA22 · 28/06/2010 22:26

your telling me it is! ive been using St Tropez Everyday - but i still go streaky and uneven with it - even with exfoliater and moisturiser.

and as it starts to wear off it looks terrible. so im going to try Fake Bake which gets rave reviews.

so - i should steer clear of the original fake tan then - yes?
the fair one - is it just a lighter version or is it a moisturiser with hint of tan? not that it really matters....ill give it a whirl

ThatVikRinA22 · 29/06/2010 22:57

OP posts:
glitterkitty · 01/07/2010 21:28

Ahhh.... your going to be all brown and lovely

lisa34 · 01/07/2010 22:14

I had a fake bake spray tan last week and it was fab a lovely golden brown colour, very natural looking and it lasted a week!!!!!!

ThatVikRinA22 · 03/07/2010 17:45

well ive fake baked today. have to say the fair doesnt seem to have made the merest hint of difference - but it does say to use it everyday until you get the effect you want.

i wonder if id have been better (and more cost effective) using the original.

ill sleep on it and see what colour i am tomorrow.

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 03/07/2010 17:47

saw the St morritz on today in Savers for £2.49....

am tempted. dont think the fake bake fair is gonna last a week - i think ill need to put quite a few coats on before i change colour.

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 03/07/2010 23:17

well the fake bake fair which set me back 20 quid is officially shite.

its done nothing. im still the same colour (pale in case you were wondering) as before.

will have to try the original i think.

Got to say, and I know this isn't helpful, that I tried in the past and they were all a nightmare. I am pasty and can't be arsed/don't have the time to lie in sun for all over even colour.

So ... last year I started using the Dove tinted moisturiser. I'ts piece of piddle. Never ever get streaks builds up v gradually and I've occasionally done it four times in one day when suddenly realising big event next day that requires vague look of good health. Dove gives me a gentle non pasty look in about four days or so if I use once a day. If you use with any kind of natural tan, it really looks fantastic. The thing I love about it is that if you know good weather ocming, you can start using it and then I'm not too embarassed to get my legs out in public, hence they then get a better tan than normal because I'm not hiding me and my blotches. Just a thought ...

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/07/2010 19:02

i tried the dove one. and the johnsons one. and St TropezEveryDay, they always make me streaky.thats why i thought id push the boat out a bit and get a more expensive one. its not really worked though.

OP posts:
glitterkitty · 04/07/2010 20:31

Ah, vicar what a shame! You must not be as pasty as me... glad it didnt go streaky but sorry to hear you are not all brown

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/07/2010 21:24

i will check again tomorrow! DD says i am not quite as glowhite as i was!

ive applied another layer. it may yet work! like i say - i really do have tan proof skin. i dont seem to have much melanin or whatever it is that tans you.

i can spend 2 weeks in the canaries and not come back any browner than i went!

Hi

I have black hair but pale pale skin.
I like St Tropez Mousse. I find it much easier to apply than the lotion as it blends more easily. It also works out cheaperI can get about 7 full bodies from the large £30 bottle of mousse and about 3 if I use the lotion. The lotion is also darker than the mousse.

I also find it easier than gradual tanners- I find with these I need 4 coats to get an even finish and decent colour.

That said you do need to be careful with your face, knees, ankles, elbows and strangely the crease of your armpit (near where your bra strap begins....I find tan gathers here!)

Here is my step by step technique. Sorry it's so epic!:-

  1. Exfoliate really well- poss for a couple nights before. Use a loofah- most scrubs are rubbish. If your skin is dry little patches will rub off as you are applying the tan.
  1. Apply a cheap moisturuser to ankles, knees, elbows, armpits, neck and face. Also apply to wrists and hands in case any seeps past gloves.
  1. Put on rubber gloves

First legs

  1. Put mousse on calves use small circular movements and blend from front to back of legs.
  1. BLEND down to feet and ankles. if you run out put more on calves and blend again- less dry.
  1. Do one leg then the other to keep track!
  1. Put mousse on thighs- again blend round the back and sides- look in mirror cause it can be easy to miss say a side when the surface area increases!
  1. BLEND down over knees- again you don't want to apply too much here- just a light coating so if you run out put more on thighs and blend down in CIRCULAR movements.

Now your legs are done time for your body!

  1. Start with your bum, rub in and upwards to cover lower back. the mousse won't look totally even just keep blending.
  1. Then hug yourself around your tummy and do mid section of back.

  2. Then stretch arms over shoulders (as when stretching underside of arm) and do either side of top of back/shoulderblades.

I USUALLY FIND THAT BY DOING MY BACK IN 3 SECTIONS I CAN DO IT MYSELF JUST CHECK MIRROR AND STRETCH! ALTERNATELY ASK FOR ASSISTANCE!

  1. Now you do the front of your body....if you try before you've done your back you'd just smudge it. Fairly simple start at lower tummy and blends upwards. Remember to do your sides so it joins up with your back. Only trouble spots are tumy button- tan can gather here so skim over it and nipples do around them cause can go a bit speckly and brown!

Stop at your collar bones.

Now time for arms

  1. Apply tan to back of forearm and blend to underside where you'd catch less sun. Do same with tops of arms. Just blend over elbow- they can go orange really easily.

Rememeber to blend carefully around armpit as this is a trouble spot for me- i tend to do it when doing my torso and then again when arms-oops

  1. Apply to tops of shoulders. Make sure you join up your back, arms and torso.

Now time for face and neck.

Mix the mousse half and half with moisturiser.

  1. Blend mixture up neck from collarbones.

  2. Apply to face taking care to blend well arounfd jawline, eyebrows and hairline.

Time to perfect!

  1. Check yourself in mirror before moving gloves. Use tissue to gently dab/rub hairline, jawline, eyebrows. Do same on knees and elbows if worried.
In salons they sometimes use a flicking motion with a tissue to blend/tone down knees etc

  2. Remove gloves. Very carefully wash hands make sure you don't drip water on legs/body.

  3. Rub moisturiser into backs of hands. Get large wad of cottonwool and use it to apply a small amount of mousse to backs of each hand. Keep fingers together. Rememebr to do sides of hands amd blend wrist area well. You don;t want much on your hands so it may be even better to mix tan half and half with moisturiser and put in dish before you remove gloves....but I don't bother!

  4. If you get any on your palms get a tissue and rub it between both hands- all you can do without going to faff of washing hands

  5. Go to bed in a nightshirt

  6. Wake up and think 'what have I done?'

  7. Shower and emerge lovely and brown- maybe a bit of a shock at first but you soon feel great and it is summer!

Hope that helps!
