talk to me about make up...

im in my early 20s with combo skin, kinda drys out

I use the OCM...

I am stuck slapping on same old rimmel foundation (liquid) rub it in with my hands, then using a rimmel powder over the top, then bronze for some definition - and blush on apples of cheeks

tell me

what should I be buying, what is a good brand to trust?

Im allergic to clinique

You haven't said if you are happy with what you are doing....it sounds like you have a good routine so are you looking for more coverage/better colour or just wanting to trade up to a more expensive brand?

Personally, foundation is the one thing I spend more on - I don't spend alot on anything else in my make-up bag. I use Bobbi Brown luminous and love it. Chose the colour by going to house of f and having my make-up done by the girl at the counter so the match is perfect.
During this summer though, I have moved to Laura Mercier tinted found and am liking it alot. Like I said, I don't buy anything else expensive - just go for whatever is on offer. I think if you have the foundation right, the rest looks better.

Both of those options are more expensive than Rimmel though so not sure if you are wanting to spend more than £25? Hopefully some of the fab make-up experts on MN can offer some more advice! Good luck!

Im not overly happy with the coverage.

Because my skin is dry, if I apply a powder over the top I get a good texture to myskin but it dries out - if I dont put the powder on, all my base is gone by mid afternoon...

bassically, i was never taught what was the right kind of product to buy and how to apply it, and when

Always a good idea to get a mini-makeover at one of the counters if you have a good dept store near you. Go away after it and see how the products work for you over the course of a day - don't buy on the spot.
If you have some money to treat yourself, I would say Bobbi Brown or Mac...or Laura Mercier. Not sure which less expensive brands to use though - sorry!

A primer can help with keeping the coverage for more of the day, and a tinted moisturiser could help with the dryness. I don't use powder anymore as I find it sits in my wrinkles (but you won't have that problem as you are lovely and young)

If your skin is dry in your twenties, think you need to drink more water and exfoliate then your make up will go on easier.

You could maybe try mineral makeup. It's supposed to be good for those who are allergic to ordinary makeup. They even say that you don't even have to worry about taking it off at the end of the day as it's so natural. The foundation is like loose powder and you put it on with a large powder brush. There's a technique to applying it, there are lots of demos on You tube about how to use it. I use the Bare Escentuals range. It really works for me, it brightens up my old tired skin and I wouldn't be without it.

If you're looking at the cheaper brands, my favourite is Revlon, and judging by all the make up reviews and tutorials I've watched on youtube, lots of people agree with me.

Actually, I would really recommend watching make up tutorials on youtube. I've learnt so much. Pixiwoo, gemsmacquillage, lollipop26 and camieloveskiwi are my favourite make up vloggers on there.

Ive used the minerals range from the bodyshop.

I have watched some tutorials, and alot of chanel foundation is used - far too above my price range.

What is Mac like and where is the best place to buy it / try it?

You need Shiney or Traceybath - they are the experts in make-up.
