what is a decent style magazine for a 30-something me?

I bought Instyle today because I fancied some inspiration and want to expand on my wardrobe a little, with some 'on trend' stuff rather than the sensible post pg clothes I've been buying.
And it was all a bit disappointing. Nothing I could actually wear - there was a section on white, a section on festival wear, and then loads of really casual skimpy stuff. I'd love to need festival clothes, but really need clothes for work and playing with the kids... and I definitely don't have the body anymore that can take skimp..
Anyone recommend any other magazines that might suit me a bit more?

I'm 36 and read RED, Marie Claire, Harpers, Vogue, Grazia and Elle.....and I got them all FREE with Tesco Clubcard vouchers ...smug old boot

I take snippets from each of them and try to stay up to speed with what the young things are up to.

I fail miserably most days and resort to jeans

I quite like Essentials, it still gives you trendy ideas but also doesn't make you look like you are still trying to be mid twenties and not quite making it!
Glamour may be ok too.

sweetheart · 24/06/2010 12:36

I read Look magazine as their recommendations are usually high street and affordable unlike many of the other fashion magazines

Cabatach · 24/06/2010 16:21

She magazine is good for 'realistic' fashion. I also take my 'inspiration' from people I see out and about - often think 'Ooh that looks good wearing that with that and I have that at home' , if you get my drift!

whatevermaycome · 24/06/2010 17:01

Red or Grazia I would say.

wolfnipplechips · 24/06/2010 18:00

Red and Grazia here too.

brimfull · 24/06/2010 18:01

I like woman and home but I am ancient compared to you

mckenzie · 24/06/2010 18:02

Easy Living have some great fashion articles but they are not always high street prices unfortunately.

SparkyMalarky · 24/06/2010 18:03

Know what you mean about In Style. I also feel a bit old for Glamour now at almost 35!

Red and Grazia definitely and I also get Easy Living which sometimes has great, very wearable clothes - I discovered By Malene Birger in there (when I lose all my baby weight, I want a dress from her!)

janeite · 24/06/2010 18:05

I like Red best.

Easy Living has v pretty pics but nothing to actually read and nothing that I can afford. It really seems to play to the 'Pedlars' and bunting brigade at Toast and beyond prices. I have refused to buy it since they had an article on cutting back, which featured a 300 pound pair of wellies.

Zondra · 24/06/2010 18:09

Red,Easy LIving,She & Grazia.

blossoming · 24/06/2010 18:18

I like Red, but there's hardly any clothes in it.
I struggle with this one too. I've just stopped my subscription to In Style as it's not 'talking' to me any more.
I read Grazia sometimes but those clothes are hardly wearable either, and I still read Glamour (at 39).
To know what's on the high street, there's Look and Heat.
TBH, I'd rather look at what the stylists are doing on Net a Porter, and try and put a similar look together on the cheap.

Weird... I was thinking of starting a similar thread. The problem isn't just knowing what is in, and what suits, its knowing where to find it.
I have precious little time for shopping, I want to be able to go to exactly the right places.

bluejeans · 24/06/2010 19:29

ggirl - snap! I was reading a discarded copy of Woman and Home at work today and it had some nice clothes in it (June edition). I'm 40 though! Would never have imagined myself recommending W&H as a style guide! Looked to have quite a bit of reading in it too

Red, Grazia, She

janeite · 24/06/2010 21:31

My 15 year old reads Glamour - the fashion in it is far too scanty for the likes of me!

LadyBiscuit · 24/06/2010 21:36

Woman & Home? Seriously? I remember it being dead frumpy as a teenager. But then I am no longer a teenager

Francagoestohollywood · 24/06/2010 21:41

Interesting thread. I really don't look at magazine for inspiration, I have to say.
I love Vogue UK. It's an irritating magazine full of useless heiresses and the likes. But the fashion is excellent. It's perfect escapism imho.

southeastastra · 24/06/2010 21:43

i usually just get on the web for inspiration and just look at shop sites

and also this topic of course

iamreallysilly · 24/06/2010 21:46

Red and Grazia, although mostly for inspiration, then can go to new look, catalogue, or charity shop to find similar!!

GeorginaWorsley · 24/06/2010 22:43

Woman and Home here,am araid
I am 43,but always see stuff I like in there, and on 'real' women too.
Also Red and She,but agree with comments about Easy Living.

iloveasylumseekers · 24/06/2010 22:46

I'm 34 and picked up a copy of Woman & Home today as well, for the free gift mostly. It was actually really good - lots to read, lots of lovely fashion. I read more of it than I do Red or Marie Claire. I actually mentioned it to my husband as I was quite surprised - in my head it was like Good Housekeeping with fewer vacuum cleaner reviews.

I used to love Easy Living but that has really gone off the boil recently; no proper journalism at all - half of it is bunting/cupcakes, the other half is cut and pasted from t'internet.

bluejeans · 24/06/2010 23:22

ilove they should rename W&H!

veryconfusedandupset · 25/06/2010 10:22

Another vote for W & H here - feel able to come out of the closet about how great a magazine it is having seen comments above!
