Can anyone tell me how to tone down my highlights which have too much bleach in them this time and have turned my barnet canary yellow. It's not a good look for a 40 something mum. i'm going to take the plunge and change to a lovely caramel colour next time i go to the hairdressers because i'm fed up with the maintenance of blonde hair but need a fix for the interim. Any ideas fashionistas?

I think you need a toner, but I am no expert

Technoprisoners · 23/06/2010 12:40

I have the same problem and am thinking about trying an ash-coloured semi-permanent. I think anything with any red tones at all (i.e. any 'golden' blonde or light brown colours) might make the bleach go orange - horrors.

Schwarzkopf Touch of Silver shampoo is really good, it's a purple shampoo which tones down the brassiness. Don't be put off by the bottle saying for grey hair, I swear by it.
I buy mine from Boots, but can't find it on their website to give a link.

Whatever you do, don't do what I once did which was to try to tone down yellow hair done by hairdressers with light brown brown semi permanent home dye. Result = khaki coloured hair!!! Apparently, you need some red in the dye to stop the green colour happening! I've heard that ketchup can reduce brassiness, but never tried it myself.

Realise I've been no use at all!!

thanks everyone and tomorrow i shall source she silvery one tomorrow sheseversofamous ands will let everyone know how i got on. Don't think i'm brave enough to try the ketchup but it rings a bell with me too.

Be very very careful. Go with a shampoo with toner rather than trying to tone it if you dont know what you are doing. One of the ashy shampoo toners, or purple/blue ones will work a treat. There are loads of them about. Aveda Blue Malva is one but the one suggested above by Schwartzkopf will be as good if not better.

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/06/2010 16:44

The shwarzkopf stuff is great - you can get a stronger version from hair salons (just ask for silver shampoo) - it only costs a tenner and is brilliant, and lasts for ages.

Don't do what I did once and put the stuff on in a bath and get engrossed in a rivetting book and leave it on your head for over an hour. I had vaguely lilac hair for a time.

swissrole · 23/06/2010 18:36

oh, that lilac look is all the rage. They call it lavender - Kelly Osbourne is sporting it. Went to boots but don't stock the brand any more. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Might try blue malva or hairdressers.
