I am useless with hair - help

When you start to go grey and have quite a few wiry grey hairs coming through (on head!), what do you do ? I think colouring is probably a no as I dont want a block of colour growing out halfway down my head with grey above, and do not go to the hairdressers enough to keep it 'topped up'.

What do other people do?

oops - forgot to say - darkish brown hair!

I'm just leaving mine for the moment but it is turning into a noticeable streak this year rather than odd scattering.

The problem is Otherside, I think it is so ageing on me and I look an old hag as it is! I would love to make it less noticeable for now, until I can go all out grey which I will love.

Blonde highlights?

frogetyfrog · 21/06/2010 17:28

I did wonder about blonde highlights. I am sure I have read somewhere that high or low lights are the way to go in this situation.

What is the difference between a low and a high light.?

anybody? I really want to know what to do!

Looked it up for you :

Simply put, highlights lighten and brighten your hair colour, while lowlights darken and deepen it. Common highlighting hues include blonde, gold and chamomile tones, while lowlights are likely to be reds, plums and auburn shades. Two or three colours can be used throughout the hair to create shimmering, true-looking contrasts.

You could try Bumble&Bumble hair powder. It is primarily a dry shampoo but it also covers the hair colour wise. Its a godsend between colours (or if you haven't coloured) and has the added bonus of halving the amount you have to wash your hair

Thanks GreatGoogly . You are right - I should have looked it up! But I suppose I was hoping some really good hairdresser would come on and explain in real terms what they are and which would be better for me!!!

Sloany - I will look that up!

Thanks both.

Just speak to a decent hairdresser - highlights are the way to go, possibly with some darker shades mixed in, depending on the look you agree on.

You don't have to have the whole head done every time, n fact sometimes you can just top up with a few along the parting - before going on holiday, say.

But it does change the texture of your hair - be prepared for a lifetime of conditioner.

thankyou.

What colour is your hair naturally? Mine is a mid to dark chesnut brown. I am at the stage where I have to have an all-over permanent colour every six weeks as the roots around my hairline are white! I'd love to go grey elegantly, and have beautiful soft blonde and platinum highlights but I'm too scared to take the plunge - I just don't feel old enough to give in to it yet, and I don't feel like a blonde! Even a grey/blonde! Also natural blondes tend to go grey nicer than brunettes so I'm not sure it won't just look crap on me anyway. And I have to go through the dreaded two-tone regrowth head for a year or so as well.

If you don't colour your hair already then I would definitely recommend you start having subtle mixed colour highlights - just few shades lighter than your own, toffees, caramels, pale golds, and built it up in stages so that as more grey comes through, you move to blonder/cooler colours with less copper in them. It will be a long-term commitment and expensive to maintain, but if done well it will look fabulous. Good luck!

FellatioNelson · 24/06/2010 18:58

Just noticed you said you don't want to keep going to have it done. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's inevitable I'm afraid! Unless you grit your teeth and let it go naturally - see how it looks for a couple of years, you might be lucky. Some people go grey with chutzpah. If not, you can always rethink becomeing high-maintenance!

frogetyfrog · 24/06/2010 19:04

Fellatio - I dont colour yet. I know I will not go grey with chutzpah!!!! I will have to consider becoming high maintenance but with budgets as they are it may not be an option anyway!!!

My hair is mid brown. So you reckon subtle mixed colour highlights. I may well take the plunge if money allows.

Thanks for advice. Wish I had appreciated my hair before all this grey suddenly arrived. I am going to be as wiry as hell too.
