Lost whole make-up kit, so what would be your ideal recommendations for starting from scratch?

Lost all my make-up (as well as all our holiday luggage!) in the floods in France so I'm looking on the bright side and focusing on some retail therapy to replace what I've lost. Trying to see it as an opportunity to do an overhaul and would love to know what others think are essentials in their kit and couldn't do without.

Been meaning to try bareminerals for a while to replace my tinted moisturiser? Anyone recommend it? What's the best mascara nowadays?

Nice positive spin on that boop - not great on make up but I would really recommend this mascara for a night out - does exactly what it says on the tin

My mascara recommendation would be Max Factor too, I use Masterpiece Max for every day, it's about £10, doesn't smudge but still easy to remove. I have dark under-eye circles and couldn't do without Laura Mercier Secret Concealer, it's the only pricey make up I use but well worth the money, small pot lasts ages and loads better than Touche Eclat. HTH and sorry about your luggage disaster.

I have recently started using Bare Minerals and it's fab. I'm not very good at make up but it very easy to use and feels lovely on your face. Good luck with your shopping

Blinc mascara all the way. Never smudges, always lasts. Is brill.

If it were me I'd probably try and kit myself out from free gifts in magazines
In all seriousness, I got Glamour this week just for the BeneFit It Stick on the front, it is the best concealor I've ever used, I used Boing before that, but this is even better. I think it's meant to be some kind of line hider, but it really evens out my skin tone, so much so that I can even wear just tinted mousturiser on the top rather then foundation.
For lipgloss, save yourself the bother and get Carmex. SHiny lips, no sticky gunk.
I'm a big fan of No7 360 mascara, have had some dodgy cheap ones.
And if you're really splashing out, get Vitalumiere foundation. For more budget stuff, you can't go wrong with MaxFactor ime.
Though if you are near a MAC stockist, scrap all the above and just get them to make you over and buy everything.

Mascara - the new clinique lasting lashes one. It's not wow as in volume but it stays put even if you rub your eyes so a great everyday job. It managed to survive an hour long facial on Saturday with lots of faffy rubbing and tapping. Comes off only with warm water. No smudges - amazing!

I love By Terry tinted moisturiser - not cheap but lovely texture, gives a lovely glow and lasts AGES.

Love most of Bobbo Brown - concealer, blusher, eye shadows (particularly Bone as a base), cream liner.

Urban Decay eye shadow primer is amazing - make up lasts all day and all night with that boyo! Also UD eye shadows for night time (bit much sparkle for day) and also the eye pencils - lovely and soft.

I also love Benefit Dandelion and Benentint lip balm.

Love mineral foundation but actually have realised that I prefer to use proper foundation and use the finishing powders that they also do (ie they are transparent) as a powder to finish on the top. Best of both worlds.

I prefer Lily Lolo mineral foundation to Bare Minerals having bought and tried both. Bare minerals has those tiny sparkly bits in it iykwim. Lily lolo much cheaper also and I found the colours are better for me.

SloanyPony · 21/06/2010 18:39

QVC!!!! Buy as much as you can from there as you can send it back if you dont like it. They stock bare minerals so if you aren't sure about it, get it from there not Debenhams or somewhere, as at least you can send it back if you hate it. They also stock Bobbi Brown and Benefit among many others.

28 days, hate it, send it back, easy peasy.

I second Bobbi Brown counter.
I did just that.Cost me £££ but for first time in my life, felt i had the whole make up thing cracked.

boopbedo · 22/06/2010 08:14

ooh, thanks for all those messages. Think I'll trot along down to Bobbi Brown in Bristol and put myself at their mercy. Reckon I deserve it.

Realised that I last did that when expecting my little girl so most things in my bag were over 2 years old anyway and probably need replacing. I'll pick up a Max Factor mascara as well.

Good one on Lily Lo, Honesty Box. Just googled them and going to get samples to give a whirl.

Benefit Bad girl mascara is excellent. I really really like benetint blusher as well but you'd probably have to be quite dark to wear it. also clinique quickline eyeliners are great. they go on really smoothly and have a soft smoky look - the dark chocolate one looks really natural
