interview tuesday after years of being SAHM - what not to wear? Help!

Ok, so after 3 years as a SAHM and money being always a bit tighter than I would like, I decided to look for a part time job that is local. So, the good news is that I have an interview for a shop assistant job on tuesday.

My previous work experience is corporate (I.T), and now I mostly wear dresses/leggings/pumps/rolled up chinos etc etc.

So, what are the main importants things I should follow with regards to outfit for interview?

  1. Are bare legs ever acceptable? Because I personally will always go for the skirt as opposed to trousers, but would that mean having to wear nude tights?

  2. I kind of like the rolld up chinos, blouse and jacket combination but is this just a no no?

  3. As for accessories, I have a lovly oversized black leather tula bag with studs but am I better of buying something more run-of-the-mill 'smart' and of normal size?

  4. I have long hair that I either have straight of GHD curls is it too much of risk having it down - is hair up an interview must?

Sorry to have so many questions but my previous interview was about 10 years ago and it was super-super-smart suit type thing (but these days, I seem to steer away from this kind of thing - no idea why!)

Thanks for any help and advice

I would say no to bare legs and no to rolled up chinos. I think the bag would be fine.

tethersend · 19/06/2010 19:39

What sort of shop is it?

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 19:40

Thanks janite

tether - it sells mirrors and frames, and gifts and stuff like that.

I think smart but casual is fine- hair up definitely and the bag seems fine.

If I had an interview for a shop job Id wear black trousers, flat shoes/pumps and a smart shirt or blouse.

janeite · 19/06/2010 19:42

Do you want to wear something you've got already, or buy something new?

JaxTellersOldLady · 19/06/2010 19:43

Wear something smart but not 'city suit' smart.

You are going to be selling nice items, so to me your appearance should be smart but comfortable, not too try hard. And dont worry about the handbag!

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 19:45

mmm well I was thinking of maybe wearing something I already and maybe buying a smart jacket to go with, or some new shoes.

But, I don't think my existing stuff is smart enough, and my previous workwear is all thrown away/ebayed.

OP posts:
janeite · 19/06/2010 19:47

What have you got already then?

I think you'd be fine with trousers or a skirt and a nice top, rather than a full-on suit.

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 20:05

mostly dresses like this:
dress

and trouser-wise they are all either cropped or rolled, or jeans

I have skirts that are kind of like this:
skirt

But, yes - I hear what are you saying. So, maybe nice tailored skirt with nude tights, and a blouse, and a smart jacket (or smart dress and jacket?) I think maybe next may have something not too expensive....

~goes off to look~

what about this kind of outfit?

here

OP posts:
JaxTellersOldLady · 19/06/2010 20:10

the floral dress with a little cardi and some nice shoes would be fine for an interview.

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 20:13

thing is jax is the dress is very short on me (very long legs) and I worry it is too short.

OP posts:
Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 20:14

what about this?

here like the shape of the skirt and with some nice black shoes would look nice

OP posts:
Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 20:17

oooh I like this could I get away with it with nice jacket and shoes?

OP posts:
janeite · 19/06/2010 20:19

Yes, I like that skirt.

I've got this suit which looks much more expensive than the price suggests and even though it is man-made fibre. I love it.

janeite · 19/06/2010 20:20

Oh and the M&S skirt has a lovely flirty fish-taily bit at the back.

tethersend · 19/06/2010 20:23

Nice blouse here...

This is a bargain and would be great over a black or brown dress...

Nice dress...

Or something like this tucked into a pencil skirt with a wide belt...

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 20:28

janeite and tether great finds there. Will look in our local M&S for that suit (with time constraints as they are, would rather just buy from shop instead of online...)

And tether those tops are lovely, and the topshop dress! Not as keen on the jacket but that's just the colour that puts me off.

Worth having a look in Debenhams, they have a sale on and some really nice stuff. Surprisingly

Jewelsandgems · 19/06/2010 22:02

Will check it out tether!

I got a jasper conran dress from debenhams for £17!! It has cap sleeves, a scoop neck, a skinny belt and a fishtail back pleat (and it is fully lined in aubergine colour, which you can see a glimpse of at the neckline - looks very nice)

Did not find any satisfactory jackets, so hoping my zara cinched in waist one will do

Brilliant - it sounds lovely. Can you find a pic?

Good luck!

tethersend · 20/06/2010 19:31

Debenhams Rocks!

I got a Jasper Conran suit from there recently for an interview and got the job. I love it.

So pleased you got something- good luck, and remember to tell us how it goes
