Why is my hair like candy floss?

My hair is curly - not Nicole Kidman, more Hugh Fearnley-W - and dryish but over the last few weeks it's gone to a brittle frizz. I don't tend to hairdry, it's not even been that summery here (Ireland) over the last while, and no amount of Aussie whatnot has made any difference. I drink a lot of water.

Help, before it all starts breaking off on the brush?

I look a complete fright.

buy a hot oil treatment? although my hair is straight the only conditioner that has ever made a difference is dove. my hair feels in much better condition when i use it. maybe you could use a leave in conditioner?

VintageGardenia · 17/06/2010 15:16

I have tried using the John Frieda leave-in cream and I find even the smallest amount makes my hair really lank. Sorry to be contrary.

Does the hot oil thing work? I remember my mum using those when I was at school, standing them in a cup of hot water.

Your hair sounds similar to mine VG; what a pain!
There's plenty of it but its fine and lacking in substance. I've straightened mine for many years - not with irons, just a barrel brush as irons make it appear thinner (does that make sense?) and limp.
I'm going through a natural phase atm but without fail, every morning when giving myself the 'once over' (looking at hair from every angle) there's always a flat area (usually my crown) - it ain't attractive!

VintageGardenia · 17/06/2010 15:49

Oh you can be my hair twin. I think I might have that flat thing too, because all of a sudden my hair is lank at the root and drizabone all over the rest. I have a shortish cut atm too, bobbed chinnish length, so I can't even chop the crappy parts off or I'll have nothing left & look like a man & have to wear lipstick every day!

you prob already know all this but these tips might help?

saythatagain · 17/06/2010 16:01

O yeah, I know that feeling VG. I'm tall (5'11") so could very easily look 'manish' if I went for a shorter cut. Its a no win situation - I go through phases of 'doing' my hair every day (thats the only time it looks its best in all honesty) then think fuck it, go natural and don't give a damn. Maybe some very wise person will pop on and give us the best product advice ever!
I might add that I'm currently using the Tigi Superstar volume big hair stuff before drying - it has really helped keep things smooth...for a day anyway!

Well ninja I had never heard of vinegar... maybe it is the shampoo I am using, thought it's one I got from the hairdresser when I last had it cut. Perhaps I do need a trim and a treatment and in the meantime should think about the oil, and the vinegar ... and perhaps some chopped herbs? There used to be an egg-based shampoo iirc.

maybe a really light gently non chemical shampoo would help? they also said eating nuts (i think) and other stuff might help? not sure if a full blown viniagrete on your help will help or just make you hungry

wineismysaviour · 17/06/2010 16:23

Moroccan oil will tame that candy floss hell...amazing stuff...

Find the no shampoo/curly girl method thread on here and maybe give that a try. Basically No shampoo, wash with silicone free conditioner, minimum combing, no silicone styling products and dry naturally. It works for me
