Anyone know anything about Marchesa?

JaneS · 16/06/2010 15:15

Still looking for a wedding dress (DP, probably rightly, vetoed the one I found because it is very short!). Some evil person gave me a link to Marchesa's fall 2009 collection before realizing that (being a year old), it's not available any more. I love the red dress here:

www.marchesa.com/

Anyone know how much it would have cost and where I could find similar? Does Bicester outlet even do Marchesa?

If anyone is lucky enough to own any, could they tell me what they think about the fit/colours/fabrics?

Thanks!

Why not take the picture (don't know which you mean as it just links to homepage) and get one made to fit?

Then you can choose your own fabric, colour and it will fit perfectly and still probably be cheaper!

JaneS · 16/06/2010 15:20

Yes, sorry, I can't make that website give me a more specific link. It's Marchesa Notte, and it's the red dress that's not one-shoulder.

But anyway, I don't think I can get something made in 8 weeks? My fault for being so lazy, no doubt.

Disenchanted3 · 16/06/2010 15:28

I think 8 weeks is plenty of time if you start looking now?!

hellymelly · 16/06/2010 15:32

That dress is really lovely.I would have thought you could get something made in 8 weeks ,but first why not call Marchessa and ask/beg for any left over stock? A larger size could easily be altered too. They may have one left over from a press sample,or they may have a sample sale coming up.Offer a bottle of champange or something to say thanks and speak to soemone in head office or the press office,Good luck!

minibmw2010 · 16/06/2010 15:57

According to their website they only sell in Harrods and Libertys (in London) and one other random shop in Surrey. I'd be surprised if they have an outlet store as its so so pricey to start with. I think Hellymelly's suggestion is your bset bet .. ring them up and beg !!

Frankly though I'd be taking a picture of the dress to a decent dressmaker and paying a fraction of the cost. You have plenty of time left.

VerityBrulee · 16/06/2010 16:37

Marchessa is primarily sold in the US, ebay.com has lots, is this the one you like?

Other Marchessa dresses

That dress would be very staightforward to make if you can find a dressmaker.

JaneS · 16/06/2010 16:48

You are all wonderful, thanks. I had though dressmakers take months and months! In that case, does anyone know of a good one near Oxford? I know there is a lady with a little shop near Gloucester Green that says she will make to order, but the clothes she's already made in that shop are awful!

Verity, you sound as if you know about this - when you say that dress would be straighforward to make, how can you tell? Is it just the shape is an easy one? Thanks.

Btw, I only thought to look on the British ebay (duh!), so didn't find all of those - a US 8 is a 12, right? Anyone know how Marchesa sizes go?

OP posts:
VerityBrulee · 16/06/2010 16:51

Not in the UK so I can't recommend anyone, but often fabric shops will have a list of dressmakers they recommend. That's a fairly classic shape and shouldn't cause an experienced dressmaker much difficulty.

DD calling but I'll look for a pattern in a min!

JaneS · 16/06/2010 16:52

You are so very kind. Thanks.

Agree a dressmaker is a good idea.

It would also be worth looking at Issa dresses - they do quite a few that are similar to the one you like. Sold on Net a Porter and in other places too I think.

here's a link

JaneS · 16/06/2010 16:59

Minipie, I love those too! I have tried on an Issa dress though and it was all wrong on me, sadly.

I am off to start another thread to see if anyone knows a good dressmaker ...

Ok had a bit of a google for you and there is a recommendation here for a woman called Anna Fink in Summertown:

traceybath · 16/06/2010 17:15

Marchesa is also sold on netaporter and the outnet but it is mucho £££.

Verity's suggestion is probably your best bet.

VerityBrulee · 16/06/2010 17:30

Vogue evening dresses

This is similar enough for a dressmaker to tweak

another possibility

cupparooibos · 16/06/2010 18:53

This looks like the same dress in blue Bluefly but Bluefly doesn't ship outside the U.S.

However, it gives you the back view for reference.

cupparooibos · 16/06/2010 18:55

Ebay in size 10 US

bishboschone · 16/06/2010 20:38

I have had dealings with marchesa , they are very very overpriced for the quality.

I would say they are dresses that are designed for red carpet events and therefore not meant to last..I will elaborate if you are interested.

Of course if you only need it for one day that won't matter to you but I think you would be dissapointed with the quality compared to the cost.

JaneS · 16/06/2010 21:29

Thanks for that, bish. I baulk at paying 6k for something rather cheap looking (one of their designs on net-a-porter), tba. I just want a long dress that will look pretty, and the general shapes there would work on me. However, my lovely friend is going with me to the outlet village soon, so perhaps we will find something there. To be honest, looking at dressmakers' stuff, I'm not overly impressed. I am a right perfectionist though, and love the hunt ... hope I'm not too boring bringing you ladies into it?

OP posts:
JaneS · 16/06/2010 21:30

Oh, and bish, what is wrong with A Certain Brand Which Will Be Nameless From Henceforth?

OP posts:
bishboschone · 16/06/2010 22:35

LRD, I just wrote a reply but am worried about getting into trouble (wimp alert). I will email you if you want. If not its up to you but I wouldn't spend £6 grand on one.

JaneS · 16/06/2010 22:43

No, no worries. I was wondering a bit about that myself - plus I suppose it's not very polite to them. But I am happy to take your word for it - put it this way, I've not seen anything with their dresses that would make me want to pay 6k!

I really appreciate the info though, it helps hugely.

OP posts:
bishboschone · 16/06/2010 22:52

I truly don't think any dress is worth £6.k ..

Fwiw , I got married in a blue cheong sam dress, so I understand your need for something different.

JaneS · 16/06/2010 23:04

Thanks.

I would just feel awful about the waste of so much money. I don't have a problem with saying that Primark clothes aren't worth buying and that a 100 pound dress is usually better made than a 5 pound dress (not that I can usually afford the former) - but 6k seems obscene. I am really cheered up that you agree it's not worth it.

OP posts:
bishboschone · 16/06/2010 23:20

I would find a pic of what you want and find a dressmaker. Even if it cost you £500 at least you get what you want.
