home hair dye mini-disater

Right I bought a "light" brown hair dye Clairol Perfect 10. I have naturally light brown hair that had some bloody awful old highlights growing out. The mid lengths of my hair were yellow and orange and looked just hideac.

So I buy the home hair dye thinking- this will give me one overall colour that should be pretty close to my natural one, so no regrowth issues.

I do the dye, rinse it out and dry. My hair is a sort of warm very dark brown, with it being slightly darker towards the ends. It is by no means a "wear a hat" job, but it is

1-very dark- too dark- too dark for my skin tone
2 has a real reddish tone to it which I HATE
3 there is no number three

So what can I do, I am hairdresser ambivalent, I will pay good money to have this corrected but my hair is in terrible shape, so what are my options?

Please help me!

wash it a lot with head and shoulders to help it lighten down, then live with it for a couple of weeks.

why does Head and Shoulders work?

apparently so, hair dye legend states that it helps strip dye out!

I always find those 10 minute home dyes fade pretty quickly, so it might only be a problem for a couple of weeks.

its a perm colouor!

Perm colours still fade. They don't disappear completely, like rinses and semi-perms, but the colour can fade quite a bit over time.

Second H&S advice, it is the best for stripping colour. Don't use any of those colour protect shampoos or conditioners on it at all.

If your hair is different colours you need to have it done professionally or attempt to even it out yourself by applying to the different areas in sections therby reducing the amount of time on different sections of hair. You are quite lucky it didn't go green though as this happens on lightened hair if you put brown over sometimes.

I had to wear a hat last time I went to hairdressers as was having a 5 hour bleach over 2 days and after day 1 (3 hours) my hair was Orange like carrots.

it's gone darker towards the ends because the colour has taken more there, probably due to the growing out highlights. as others have said, wash with head & shoulders, that will really strip out the excess colour. it will fade, even though it's a permanent colour. the reddish-ness could be also down to your existing highlights although, my biggest bug bear about home hair dyes is that they all have far too much red in them. this thread might help, some reviews of hair dyes/tips etc.

You can buy a bleach free hair colour remover in boots. I was sceptical, but it does work. Use that and then put a dark blonde colour over the top. Use loreal and 6, not 6.0 if you can, 6.0 is more red. If it is quite red after using the colour remover then use a dark ash blonde.

Whatever you use it will probably still catch on the ends due to the old highlights making it more porous there. However, it will also fade more quickly on porous areas.

Generally, what people call light brown is actually dark blonde in hair colour terms, so it's always best to use a shade lighter than you think you are, plus, it's much easier to go a bit darker than a bit lighter.

Thanks everyone. I washed my hair with washing up liquid yesterday and it did take some of the colour off. I have an app at a expensive good hairdressers for a colour consultation on Saturday.

It is the reddish tone that I detest, makes my skin looks really yellowish. Uuurgh.
What a mess!
