Talk to a hair dye virgin about going grey.....

I'm having to pluck grey hairs out every few days now & just wondering at what point I should stop pulling them out & start dying my hair? I have seriously loads of hair so thinning isn't an issue at this stage but it somehow doesn't seem right to keep on plucking

Presumably a shop bought hair dye that you wash in all over is designed to cover existing grey so not really much point for me at the moment as they are no grey hairs left to their own devices? And once you've dyed it, new grey still comes through - roots only or like the hideous long wiry ones I keep discovering?

I assume the only other option is highlights which presumably mask grey as it blend with blond/white highlights? Pros & cons: less obvious re-growth, more natural tones & shades but best done in a salon so pricey and not ideal for people with dark hair like mine?

Any thoughts comments and advise for a sightly traumatised 30 something

yes, its a small grey bottle, holds about 3 shampoos I think. You don't need gloves although the colour comes out browny coloured it doesn't stain....

could you let us know the name of that shampoo magicmayhem please? Sounds good

What about LUSH brown henna? Never tried myself but have heard good things.

its called colour effects OsbegaEthewulf....
they do lots of different hues...
red - 6/4
copper - 7/34
magogany - 5/5 (my favourite)
rich brown - 6/7
dark brown - 4/0
and some blonde ones that I haven't bothered to look at...

it works the same as a colour... on a scale of 3 to 12 the lighter your hair the higher the number.. if you were a a base of 4/0 something like 7/34 wouldn't make much difference and if you were a dark blonde the 4/0 would make you darker...
hope this makes sense, the best thing to do it try it, towel dry your hair and leave it on only for about 5 mins... there is no peroxide in there to lighten your hair so you can't do any damage....

let us know how you get on with it...

I'm not convinced about grey hairs sticking up being the result of plucking - I don't pluck any of mine at the top or the back of my head out and loads of them stick up, are curly, pube-like etc! Having said that, some of the ones that I have plucked tend to be a bit weird too. The colour is not a problem to me, just the horrible texture of some of them. I was 25 when I got my first grey and then they started to come in thick and fast from the age of 37 and I am now 40 and about a third grey which to me, having very dark hair, is A LOT! The problem with most dyes is that grey hair is resistant to them, although the more expensive brands will 'blend in' the grey. I had got to the stage where I was plucking out about ten hairs a day which, having fine hair and not much of it, is not good and I think it was becoming addictive. Last week I decided to take the plunge and visit a new hairdresser and he gave me lots of good tips on what he can do with my hair. I have decided to go for a complete re-style with bronze or dark blonde highlights to make the grey less noticeable. I know grey hair can look really lovely on lots of ladies and I hope with the help of my salon that I can learn to like mine. Lechatnoir - stop plucking!
