Great hairdresser in London?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a fantastic hairdresser in central London that can deal with someone (me) who is a bit touchy about getting their hair cut?

In a couple of months I hope to have saved enough to finally get my terrible hair seen to. I have had many bad experiences with hairdressers - my first professional one was done when the 'Rachael cut' was in fashion and even though I stressed that it wouldn't suit me as I have fine curly hair, that's what he did anyway - turned out a bit like a mullet.

Anyway now after dying my hair for 15 years it always goes one colour (brass) and it is very fine from illness a few years ago and stress and I have had enough.

I would just really like to go to someone who knows exactly how to cut my hair and could tell me whether I need to have a fringe again after 10 years of not having one. Am happy to pay a small portion of an arm and a leg to get this right. Thanks.

Glass- Carthusian Stree- round corner to Barbican tube. Ask for Fernando, Peter or Renee. They have a website but you'll have to google.

Good Old Days - 74 Broadway Market (Hackney) Don't know if this is not central enough, but Ricardo is excellent - Italian (are you Italian?)

year ago a friend of mine with problem hair treated herself to a cut/treatment etc at Tervor Sorbies London salon - results were fantastic & she was the most delighted with her hair that she had/has ever been.

If you are prepared to pay, I do some research and go for some old school quality.

Ben at Eleven. Amazing.

Go to Robert at Richard Ward in London. £££ but really worthwhile.

I am 'hairdresser phobic' but have been going to him on and off (with brief toddler induced hiatus) for 14 years since he was at Neville Daniel. I can actually relax when he is cutting my hair because he is brilliant and knows what he's doing and I can trust him not to mess up.

I have medium/fine frizzy hair in its natural state.

The cut is so good it 'lasts' for 3 months meaning I only have to splurge (and travel from my base in South West) four times per year. (Good excuse to shop @ Peter Jones and Kings Road too )

Stephen Way on New Bond Street - lovely hairdressers and not as £££ as you might think. I would not go anywhere else now & I actually enjoy going there unlike some other salons.

Not in central London - but if she still works there (its been two years since I left London), Peggy at MP4 salon in Crouch End is a genius. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg - at least not central London prices anyway.

She's german, lovely and can cut AND colour like a dream.

Lesley @ Ledbury MacIntyre
14 West Central St, London, WC1A 1JH

She is amazing. I had a very bad experience as a teenager and have been very weary since but i trust her 100%.

Just how much is a cut at a top London Salon with a style director or similar?

Am getting fed up of Toni & Guy so am interested in this thread, but apologies for mini hijack.

I know a brilliant guy in Muswell Hill who cuts hair from his own home (sort of a private client hairdresser - he's being flown to California over the summer by one of his clients who needs him to do her hair whilst she's out there ) - can give you his details if it's not too far away, AND he's amazingly good value!

I see Lee at Trevor Sorbie, absolutely fantastic- wont go anywhere else now, unless he "moves on" as most decent hairdressers seem to!

www.trevorsorbie.com/index.php/salons/prices/covent_garden/

Lee is I think a creative stylist- £68? possibly.

Style director is 150 there hobgoblin for a cut & blow dry.

As I sit there I look around at everyone else getting their hair done and Ive never seen a duff cut yet, and people seem to tip quite heavily so they must be pleased from what I can tell

good luck from 1foot .

Ps I have wavy, coarse hair and he does really well with it and has talked me out of a few "bad ideas" because of the coarseness of my hair or my lifestyle etc.

Thank you all once again - there are so many suggestions here that I can go on, I might actually be looking forward to getting my hair cut now - that's a first...

Most of these recommendations seem to be for blokes. Interesting.
