White Stuff - what's the quality like?

helloo, not posted on this board before, so hi!

I am thinking of getting some stuff from White Stuff (tea party cardy, and a skirt with butterflies on, or perhaps a wee dress), as it does look quite nice, but the reviews are fairly mixed regarding the quality of the fabric, and as it's not exactly cheap as chips, I just want to know if it's worth buying? Need to get stuff that will last for a bit, rather than fall apart after 2 wears and 1 wash.
also, inspiration for where to shop? good websites? have not really bought new stuff for YONKS - realised some of my work clothes pre-date my 5 year old - and just about all of it predates my 2yo

just in case it matters, I am 5'2", size 10-12 (ahem) and fairly curvy, tend to live in jeans but had a sudden moment of horror when I caught the view in the hall mirror - yikes, big bahooky....

ta in advance!

I like white stuff & have quite a few bits.
I fidn that the skirts, trousers, cardis etc are all fine, but the t-shirts and tops often seem a bit thin for the price, and they do a lot of 'raw/ unfinidhed' cut edges, which I don't like.....

Debenhams have a nice White Stuff copy called Manteray which is quite nice.

Fayrazzled · 09/06/2010 15:14

I find the quality fine. A lot of the tops are thin cotton but I find it washes OK- seams stay straight etc.

cathers · 09/06/2010 15:53

I don't find them that great quality.
this year I bought from them a top which frayed at both sleeves and is very thin, a dress which has frayed at neckline and a further dress which has gone all out of shape.
Think for the price, you can get better quality. Now tend to buy great plains, mint velvet or even.... (boden)

cathers · 09/06/2010 15:54

Though, agree with fluffy all the bottoms and skirts from White stuff have lasted

Conundrumish · 09/06/2010 16:31

My skirts have worn well but my jumpers looked dreadful after one winter of limited wearing.

AlaskaNebraska · 09/06/2010 16:32

boring cliche middle aged mum
thin shrinky fabrics

dexter73 · 09/06/2010 18:37

The t-shirts are very thin and get little holes in them very quickly. Knitwear is pretty crap and bobbly.

purplepeony · 09/06/2010 20:03

I think the quality is okay but then I only have about 3 things- a skirt, a top and a cardi, and I bought them all with a discount/in the sale.
I think the style screams White Stuff more than Boden screams Boden, IYSWIM!

The things I have bought are fairly un- White Stuff - not garish prints etc.

claphamgirl · 09/06/2010 20:05

T shirts are very thin - it used to be good a few years ago, but a bit over priced now imo.

basildonbond · 09/06/2010 22:19

I like some White Stuff (generally not the really obvious stuff i.e. most of hte dresses), however I've not been at all impressed by the quality

of the stuff I've bought in the last couple of years, only one or two things are still going strong - most have developed holes - and I'm not getting any knitwear from them again as it bobbled terribly after one wear

the other thing to look out for is the cut - for some weird reason pretty much everything is eye-wateringly lowcut - which doesn't make much sense, considering their demographic

BikeRunSki · 09/06/2010 22:27

I have been buying a few bits and pieces over the last couple of seasons, and I really like it. Just got some T shirts a couple of weeks ago which are thin, bit I think that is because it is, ahem, summer, as I got thicker ones in the winter.

absalom · 10/06/2010 13:14

I used to love White Stuff but have got really sick of them lately. The t-shirts are thin and the knitwear goes shapeless after about 2 washes. Also my mum wears it all the time, and sometimes my nan too. Not really a problem but now I am 38 and feel 40 coming towards me I am extra sensitive about dressing like people 20 and 40 years older than me!

Their skirts and jeans are ok quality in my experience though.

Whoamireally · 10/06/2010 14:05

I've just bought the pom pom skirt and sizing is a bit crap - tried a 14 on in JL and it was OK but a bit too clingy, so have ordered a 16 direct and that's even tighter Surely I can't have put on a stone since Saturday?

Quality is OK but not exceptional, not as well made as Boden - but I bought because I loved the design now not because I was planning to still be wearing it in 20 year's time.

lucykate · 10/06/2010 14:11

quality is ok, although a tad overpriced. i find the sizing odd, can't buy anything from there online, as would have to try it on. i find the sizing big.

if you want good quality, affordable clothing, try uniqlo

KMR281 · 10/06/2010 14:17

ok then, bit of a mixed bag, but basically knitwear will bobble, and my norks will be hanging out... hmm, perhaps I shall not bother, especailly as just noticed that the cardi I like is HANDWASH ONLY - i mean, come on, that's just not on really.

and whilst I don't expect something to last forever, a few years would be reasonable, given the prices I think.

so, the search continues...

I find the shape of the garments really odd. It could just be that I am an odd shape, but I find things really gape at the waist if they fit anywhere else - so the clothes possibly best fit those who have a 'straight up and down' type body shape.

cornsilkcottagecheese · 11/06/2010 15:50

The dresses are excellent.

Whoamireally · 11/06/2010 15:56

Actually, may I please revise my opinion, the quality is shit. One of the buttons has fallen off my brand new pom pom skirt and so far I have only tried it on, not actually worn it...
