What do I need for a capsule wardrobe?

Hello. I've recently shed 2.5 stone and literally have no clothes to fit me any more. Good in many ways, inconvenient in some! Anyway, I'm going to be doing a big shopping spree on a limited budget, so what essentials do I need? What's in a "capsule wardrobe"? Jeans, obv. I don't want to end up with load of stuff that I can't put together. Thank you!

Erm - for work, play or both?

I would say as a starting point for play you need:

  • two pairs of jeans - one for heels and one for flats
  • two three quarter or long sleeved fitted-ish t-shirts: neckline and colours chosen to flatter shape and colouring
  • ditto but camis or short sleeved tops
  • denim skirt
  • at least one other skirt - maybe patterned or a plain one in a colour that goes with your t-shirts
  • 2 cardigans - one dark eg black or grey and one in a colour that complements your t-shirts and suits you
  • ballet shoes
  • brown boots (go with more than black ones)
  • converse type things
  • casual jacket of some sort

Thanks! For play really as not working at the moment.

I would add to that list

  • a pair of yoga pants or similar for lounging around in at home
  • a couple of vest tops to go with them

Also, personally I look much better in shirts than t-shirts: you could swap one of the short sleeved t-shirts for a thin cotton shirt if you wanted.

Look at Gok's fashion fix
You need 24 items and about £1300
