Has anyone been a hair model?

I saw a notice in a hairdresser's window saying that they need models. Does anyone know what this entails, how often, what time of day, etc? Or is it different depending on the hairdresser? [too shy to ask the hairdresser emoticon] .

I did a few years ago. It was great. Probably the best cut I ever had but then disappointingly the hairdresser quit.

anyway...as you say it totally depends on the hairdresser. Depends on what they need you for (mine just needed me for cut and blow dry but know others have had to be really adventurous and have colour and long to short cut) and their appointments.

I used to do it all the time when I was a student - it was £5 for a cut and blow dry at Vidal Sassoon - a trainee will do the work, heavily supervised (or at least they should be!) by a qualified stylist. The downside is that it takes ages, a whole afternoon or morning usually and they go soooooooo slowly. Snip...snip....snip.

Sometimes you get a stylist who's looking to progress and get more qualifications and so you'll have someone who's already quite good, but wants to show off their technique, perhaps for an examiner. Sometimes you'll get a rookie. Sometimes - and this is the best - you get one who's finished their training and is looking for models for their final exams.

I would find out exactly who you're getting and what they want to do first!

I went a couple of times to Vidal Sassoon when I was a student, and usually there's a queue but someone used to come down the line and shout 'anyone want a radical change?', which entailed you getting a qualified hairdresser who was on a course (usually to do those haircuts you see on the posters). I ended up with Tony the Tiger style highlights on one occasion and the other time a purple crop. They usually photograph you too. As a student I wasn't that bothered but don't think I'd go there now.

Having said that, if it's a small local salon, you can go in there and quiz the trainee before you agree to it.

Mine was at a Toni & Guy salon and was a very tame cut and blow dry. They will always tell you what they're going to do before they do it so don't worry that you'll go in for a trim and come out with a purple bob!

Be brave and go in and ask GreatGoogly. I would have thought that a student will be super friendly as they'll really be needing people to complete their portfolios on.

I used to get Toni and Guy Academy people chasing me down the street to do it as I have very straight hair that's perfect for bobs. It's worth doing, usually costs £5 at academies and about £15 at salons, but it can take hours. I went to Vidal Sassoon once and it took an afternoon.

Once I was asked to do cut and colour for a demonstration, and also had my makeup done by someone who used brown eyeliner and bronzer. It looked bizarre with my pale skin and red hair.
