How can I stop my eyes going all red and brusied looking after swimming?

I need to swim twice a week to keep my back from seizing up but I come out of the pool everytime looking like I've gone four rounds in the boxing ring.

If I don't wear goggles my eyes are bloodshot, red rimmed and I can hardly see.

If I do wear goggles (and I have tried nearly every make there is) I have dark red pressure marks around my eyes that last several hours going through several shades of red and finally settling on a flattering blue smudge effect.

If I have the goggles loose enough to avoid the marks they leak like hell and I end up with red eyes due to chlorine.

So, any ideas as to what can I do to avoid this or at least minimise it? I'd greatly appreciate any tips.

no chance you can just keep your head above water and do that sedate looking froggy-stroke thing that all the Grown Ups seem to do?
daft question i suppose.

erm... dunno. would be keen to find out actually.

on similar vein, if anyone answering this thread can tell me if swim caps actually keep the water(chlorine) off the hair and which makes do it, id be interested to know. any i have used in the past did beg all to keep the water out , so whats the point?

Hmm not sure, my goggles leave marks for about an hour or so, but that's it. Perhaps you could try a different make of goggles?

MrFibble · 07/06/2010 10:56

Can't do that weirdo froggy stroke as it is so uncool and I'm banned from doing breast stoke anyway due to previous SPD. I'm a crawler...

WRT swim caps are vile - designed to split hair, pull it out and make you look daft whilst ensuring you get water in your ears.

Yes I've never come across a swimming hat that keeps water out.

Would love to as chlorine plays havoc with hair dye...

I'd look at different goggles. Swimmming hats are to stop your falling out hair blocking up filters or so our pool says as they DEMAND you wear them.

ruffletheanimal · 07/06/2010 11:03

i had spd too, mildly tho, am not banned from anything.

yy, was thinking that about the hair dye really as am a chemically assisted blonde again these days. bummer then that caps dont work

Thanks all.

Any recommendations for goggle makes suited for a nose with v. small bridge?

Also has anyone tried the vaseline on the eyelashes trick to keep the chlorine out?

Didn't know that about hair dye... Is it all colours?

ewwww

ruffletheanimal · 07/06/2010 13:55

have never heard of vaseline on eyelashes.

i never open my eyes underwater anyway. i think i have sensitive eyes coz it always stings like fark, even if i do it with plain water like in the shower.
or maybe im a weed.
