Girls' clothes that make little girls look like girls?

TotallyWipedout · 06/06/2010 21:45

My DD is nearly six, and is very tall. She's also broad shouldered and wide hipped (she's age 9-10 in Boden skirts/tops/dresses, if that helps; she's also age 9-10 in Tesco boys' t-shirts, as they're the only plain ones that I can find to fit her).

I want to buy her some straightforward t-shirt, shorts and plain jersey dresses for summer, but am at a loss. H&M have some nice plain coloured things, but they stop at age 8; on my DD, a H&M age 8 t-shirt is a tight crop top. M&S, Next, Tesco and Asda also have some reasonable things among the tat for girls of my DD's age - but, again, they stop at age 7/8, and then go full-on tarty. Boden is the obvious choice, but I'm not in the market for more Boden (my big recessionary cutback was sending my Boden catalogue straight for recycling).

Does anyone have any solutions to the problems of reasonably priced clothes for little girls who are tall and broad and don't like pink?

I've found this aswell. Have you tried pumpkin patch and Gap. I've found vertbaudet and la redoute good too.

I feel your pain! Think it is a case of trawling through the tatt rather than finding all in one lovely store.

Gap, when they have their 30% off promotion

John Lewis

Fat Face (some)

Espirit

adrienne, I've tried Gap (slightly put off by the prices, though they are much more reasonable in the sale) - but not the others. Thank you.

Dinah, I am if you are near a JL. I love JL. We used to live more or less next door to one - and are now 70 miles from our nearest one.

I haven't looked at Fat Face children's, or Esprit, so I shall suss them out. Thanks very much.

Monsoon sells some pretty little clothes for girls up to 13 years old - in many cases, the same dress/top etc is stocked right from ages 3-13, so you don't have to worry about tartiness.

weirdly I think M and S have some good girls' clothes this season, and now go up to about an age 14 in their children's wear. definitely worth a look.

Bhs have some dresses in the "upto 8 years", range, which actually go upto size 12 years dress
I'm not sure why that except maybe they want to keep the younger styles separate from the older look, more on trend styles, but worth checking to see if you like anything

I hate it that retailers think that when a girl reaches the age of 8 that she wants to dress like Miley Whatsherface!
My little girl loves being a girl! We used to buy loads from Jigsaw junior, but it's gone now.
You can still get some lovely things from the outlets though. Rachel Riley is also nice in the sale.

these t-shirts and shorts are quite nice and come in different colours. This dress is also nice, as long as it was long enough. They both go up to age 16.

My DS had some nice cord shorts from Zara when he was younger, which were a nice traditional style. I wonder if they may also do more traditional style clothes for girls? I don't think they have a website and don't live near a shop - but may be worth a look if you do. I imagine they would be reasonably priced. Also google 'Sarah Louise dress' and 'Pretty Originals' for other traditional clothing - but these are sadly on the pricey side.

I found lack of what I call 'traditional' clothes to be a real frustration, but I guess it is a case of supply and demand - if not many people want to dress their DC in the traditional style, those that do end up paying a premium.

I don't know what your sewing skills are like? If you have a sewing machine a dress might be simple to make? I was almost at the point of trying to mkake DS a suit but didn't feel confident enough - however a dress should be easier, especially a slipover style...?

munchkinland · 11/06/2010 16:25

I love Zara, most of DD's clothes are from Zara - very pretty girly stuff for bargin prices - the website is difficult to use though....

Bonsoir · 11/06/2010 18:52

Maybe try La Redoute French mail order catalogue?

sparklingchampagne · 11/06/2010 20:26

John Lewis does some really pretty girls stuff (my sister in law always complains that the dresses are 'old fashioned' but I love them because they are proper girls clothes - might be worth a try?

I love BonTon for romantic but still fashionable girls clothes. But even more £££ than Cyrillus!

donnie · 12/06/2010 11:52

I have found that the Tu clothes in Sainsbury's are quite good, they are long in the body and also their long sleeve tops are long in the arm. My 8 yr old wears the age 10 stuff from there but it goes up to 12 or 13 yrs I think. It is cheap too - I definitely recommend the sainsbo stuff. Can't get it online though which is a pain!

OhCobblers · 12/06/2010 21:36

this won't be of help for the basics but if you wanted to get a "special" dress, this website has stunning clothes.
i LOVE it!

you say you want straightforward t-shirts, shorts and jersey dresses... have you tried petit bateau? Their jersey cotton ranges go up to age 16 (although i have found them to be smaller sizes than their uk counterparts) and are simple cuts, plain (bold or pastel) colours, well-made, quality fabrics, wash well etc etc. They have jersey dresses, t-shirts and shorts every season and i would definatley recommend the brand.
having had a quick browse, im not sure where you can get it in the uk but im sure somewhere will!
