Embarrassing legs!

Since having DD I have horrid varicose veins on my legs, which means come summer I am either in maxi dresses or end up wearing leggings underneath shorter dresses (which quite frankly I think I am too old for )
I'm not really a trouser person as I am quite short anyway and trousers alsways seem to make me look even shorter!
Any ideas to get rid of my veins (I wish) or lovely skirts which will do this for me!
xx

Ha! I'm exactly the same! Only with no pregnancies involved..... Most summers I live in loose leg covering items (bulges show through tights/leggings ) but this summer I have said FUCK IT and I'm doing leggings under dresses. But then, I'm 30 so still in the age (although admittedly probably the top end of the age) bracket that can get away with it. For a while I could get away with skirts that were a couple of inches under my knees, but not anymore . Anyone who comments on weird bulgy things in my legging (oh, that's sounds somewhat perverted!) is an arse anyway.

You can get them zapped with a laser, amongst other treatments. It depends on which NHS area you're in if they'll treat you or not. I was speaking about this on another thread the other day and a lady had had hers treated which weren't that bad. Mine are hugely bulgy/discoloured, on both legs, from above my knees to about 6 inches above my ankle, but as they're not 'medically' a problem they won't treat me on the NHS. I have to wait until they're ulcerated before they'll treat them (ugh). I have the option of BUPA healthcare through my work, so I'm going to investigate that sometime in the not too distant future.

A bit of fake tan might help temporarily.

My friend had hers removed - it was a small operation and she's very happy with the results. Talk to your GP.

Thanks all. I have spoken to the doctor about them, but like ameliameerkat they don't do operations for varicose veins on the NHS here unless they are ulcered etc!
Might try the fake tan, it's started raining here now so perhaps may have to spend the summer in jeans anyway!!!
Thank you

Might be being slightly thick here, but what do you mean by ulcerated?

I've had varicose veins in one leg since I was about 9, got worse since having the kids but apart from giving me eczema in the area and the skin sometimes being itchy and also looking bloody disgusting they don't give me too much jip. I take it that doesn't come under the definition of "ulcerated"?

I never know what to wear in summer either. I also hate wearing summer sandals cos I hate having uncomfy shoes.

SwansEatQuince · 06/06/2010 19:53

grim picture of ulcerated veins if you scroll down

ameliameerkat · 06/06/2010 21:18

Mine are sore if I stand for too long, ache if I stand for anything above about 10mins, ITCH LIKE CRAZY SOMETIMES! and look seriously evil, but definitely not ulcerated, thank god!

CurlyhairedAssassin - someone who's had them from a younger age than me! I thought I was the only one! Mine started at about age 15, and have got steadily worse . They suck, don't they?!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/06/2010 23:47

Oh god, that image is gross...... No, I'm not quite at that stage yet!

I had to stay in hospital after an epidural with DS1 just because the varicose vein leg didn't get feeling back for hours and hours and then it got phlebitis in which they thought was a clot at first.

Amelia, I think it's just a genetic thing with me - my Dad has terrible ones, he had his operated on (one of his legs actually does look all brown like in the picture, but no raw ulcer bits)

I also CANNOT get out of the habit of sitting at my desk with my legs crossed. I know it's terrible but it just seems natural to sit like that.

The fake tan idea is not a bad one - but it can't disguise the bulging can it?!
