Where does your DP/H buy office clothes from?

DP's recently got an amazing new job. He's been able to wear jeans or whatever he liked in previous jobs (though he was in an office) but here it seems smart is v much the norm. At the moment he is getting a lot of wear out of his one pair of suit trousers! Having had a look about I see lots of men looking really nice in smart trousers/shirts that don't necessarily come with a jacket, but I don't know what shops these come from. A lot of the shops I've seen smart trousers in look a bit, well, middle aged or the clothes look cheap even if they're not - and do men really wear woollen trousers in summer?

Can you help? Would prefer to spend less than 70 quid on a pair of trousers if poss.

Thank in advance

DH goes to John Lewis and that's it. He is not a fan of shopping

DH recently also got new job and bought some nice stuff in the Ted Baker concession in our local department store. Trousers probably around the £70 mark but well made and will last. For cheaper stuff maybe try Uniqlo, Muji or even H&M?

FGM · 05/06/2010 13:43

M&S best stuff (Italian collection etc...) or Ted Baker.

M&S is cheaper and they have a huge range so you can get a cut that really suits.

Zara, Asos and TK Maxx.

Depends on his build and style really...

Thanks for the suggestions. He is quite thin and likes Japanese stuff - hadn't thought of Muji and Uniqlo. I suppose it's just a question of having a thorough look. TFM DP doesn't much like shopping either which is why I'm looking as his suit trousers are going to wear out/ honk at some point!!

Oooh yes, uniqlo- DP gets some stuff from there and is ultra skinny; be warned, the trousers come up quite slim even on him.

But he likes that

tethersend · 05/06/2010 14:06

Zara is definitely a good bet- nice slim (not too slim) cut and very smart without being too stuffy. Good price too.

I order everything online for him from M&S. He has never been shopping and hates it.

I heart online shopping.

My DH has a small selection of Boss suits for work. They look gorgeous and professional, and I'd really recommend them as an investment buy. A much cheaper option is Topman, which sells just about every kind of work suit - the Oxford Circus store has the best range. The fit is very flattering.

Ewe · 10/06/2010 20:31

Zara, Ted Baker, Paul Smith.

He probably needs to go to a big House of Fraser and try on a few different brands to find his style and fit.

M&S - but if for work everyday don't buy the dearest. Autograph are cut really well - not fuddy duddy at all.

Top tips from a suit advisor:

Wool will not last through everyday wear. Buy something with some polyester/manmade fibres in it. It will wear better, less creases, clean better and last longer.

Also buy 2 or 3 pairs of trousers and wear them in rotation (don't save 1 for best) wash or dryclean the whole suit at the same time and fabric will fade evenly.
Even with 3 pairs of trs the jacket will still outlive them all

Washable suits are great now and worth it - you'll save loads on drycleaning.

M&s for shirts and suits, then buy more expensive ties

DH goes to TK Maxx and swears by it the men's section always seem to have a much better range of discounted designer wear than the women's section (I hate TK Maxx because I can never find anything!). He has found the most amazing quality trousers, jackets, shirts and pullovers there seriously thousands of pounds worth of clothing for a tenth of the price.

He also buys trousers from Reiss, and the Paul Smith sale shop in London. Also many of the Jermyn Street tailors will do 3 for £100 on shirts during the sales. Men's bargains are REAL bargains!

Dorothyredboots · 11/06/2010 12:39

DH has found that cheaper trousers do not last well. Or rather they look shabby v quickly. He buys Gant, Magee, Boss or Jaeger trousers. He is an architect so has to look smart for clients/meetings, but still be able to go up scaff & ladders on site. Nightmare. And don't get me started on the unitentifiable stains that this sometimes results in!
He buys shirts from M & S, Jeff Banks & so on.
He has had his seasonal oolours and image done and is a classic clothing personality which means (as far as I can see) that if it is cheap he does not like it .
