Are prom style dresses old hat?

I am wondering about wearing one to a very swish cocktail party....are they a bit out of date now?

they arent very chic imo

I have already got one but don't want to wear it to this if it's even slightly out of date! Alternative is a more chic shift type dress (see my other thread!)

whatserface from Sex and the city wears them year in year out

but I think they are a bit teen

OK will stick with the more grown-up option of the shift.
