anyone else got invisible eyebrows?

All my life I have suffered from Skimpy Eyebrows. But now, in my (ahem) maturer years, my eyebrows seem to have almost disappeared.Does anyone know any creams/serums/magic pills that could perk up my tiny etoliated little brow hairs?

my problem is my eyebrows are too fair and can hardly be seen. When i can be bothered i get them tinted. Have you tried penciling them in? or you can get them tattood

olderandwider · 03/06/2010 10:52

starshaker -mine are fair-ish but just really sparse. Penciling them in gives me a lovely Grayson Perry look, and dying only has a very temporary effect - after about 3 weeks the colour seems to fade. Perhaps I need to look at the tattooing option. Thanks for your reply

Thanks rubyx3, I already do! It is such a pain tho' cos the effects are so short-lived.

I use an eye pencil, powder or wax stuff mostly all three from Laura Mercier and Mac
it makes a real difference

blackflyinyourchardonnay · 03/06/2010 15:36

Me! I did the disgusting shaving off your eyebrows and drawing them back on thing as a teenager, and now, coupled with my blondness, my eyebrows are almost not there!

The one time I went to have them dyed, the beautician said " they're the palest eyebrows I've ever seen!" (Yes, which is why I'd like them dyed please )

I'm not a fan of dying, I always look suprised, and eyebrow pencil is the only thing that works for me. Though my eyebrows will never be my finest feature!

smittenkitten · 03/06/2010 15:40

mine are patchy and fairer than my hair, so I use a benefit eyebrow wax thing, which is much easier and more natural looking than pencil. it's quite expensive (£25!), but lasts for years - literally, my first one lastesd 5 years.

olderandwider · 03/06/2010 16:46

Ronaldinhio/smitten - will check these out, thank you.

blackfly - at least you have blondeness and shaving to blame! I am brunette, have never shaved mine off and so just can't understand my lacklustre brows. Tis unfair

About 2 years ago my (very dark) eyebrows started to fall out until last year I had only a few strands left. It looked awful and I spent a large part of my day every day worrying about them. I used to pencil them in but I was so crap at it (and it is harder to make it look anything approaching natural when you have nothing to fill in!) that the results every day were variable not to mention that I had to check them constantly to make sure that I hadn't accidently rubbed a bit of them off/that sweat or the rain hadn't done the same etc etc. And I always had to wear full make-up every day as just drawing in eyebrows and nothing else made me look weird.

Anyway I decided to have them tattooed early this year and it had been literally life-changing. The secret is to go to a reputable person who has done loads - check out their work.

I can honestly say that mine look really natural (you have to really peer at them to tell imo) and people are quite shocked when I tell them - I've had fine brush strokes done in a dark brown. I can now go out without make-up/not worry about going swimming/to the gym/in the rain etc. I don't think about them at all and do not have to constantly check mirrors or waste an inordinate amount of time drawing and re-drawing them in.

You have to have them topped up every year but I can't imagine to going back to pre-brow days. And you do NOT have to end up looking like Jordan if you find a good practitioner!!

olderandwider · 03/06/2010 17:42

Wow, thanks moonshine! I will see how my Brow Boost purchase works out, but if I'm disappointed I may well go for the tattoo option. Can I ask you how much it costs? I'm in London btw

sparse eyebrows can be an indicator of thyroid problems, partic the outer third

moonshine · 03/06/2010 18:35

I can't deny it's expensive - I paid £500 for the top bod from a place in Chiswick (and it costs I think £150/200 every 12-18 months to have it 'freshened up') but could probably have got it somewhere £100/£150 cheaper if I'd put some leg work in but, for me, it was truly worth every single penny for the quality of the work done and quality of life it gave me.

I know it sounds a bit pathetic and vain but I didn't realise just how much not having eyebrows (especially for someone like me who has very dark brown/blackish hair and had matching eyebrows) would impact on my confidence and looks which need all the help they can get anyway!

CoupleofKooks · 03/06/2010 18:39

i use a pale brown powder eyeshadow and a get bent brush from benefit (mine are also very fair and thin from overplucking, with missing patches)
it's not perfect but it's the best i have found yet - much better than pencil

moonshine why does it need freshening up if it is a permanent tattoo?

moonshine · 03/06/2010 18:50

I'm not 100% sure but I believe it's classed as permanent only in that it won't wash off but the colour does fade after some time (I think it's cos of the sun and perhaps some gets absorbed by the body) and so the colour needs to be reapplied after some time to keep it looking as good.

moonshine · 03/06/2010 18:55

Check out some before and after photos here under brows I had the hairstroke one done.

olderandwider · 04/06/2010 12:42

Thanks for all your replies. Moonshine - the effects look really natural, am very impressed

You need Latisse. It is a product that has been FDA approved in the USA for growth of eyelashes. FDA approval means it has gone through very rigorous drugs testing. You can use it on eyebrows too, though that is not how it is marketed.

It was originally (and still is) a glaucoma medicine (eyedrops), bimatoprost, that doctors noted to have a side-effect of making eyelashes grow.

Don't think it is available here yet but surely soon?

olderandwider · 04/06/2010 15:32

HB - let us hope so. Thanks.
