Do you think Selfridges will do this?

I bought a pair of 7 for all mankind jeans from Selfridges about 3 months ago. I have just ironed them and they are wearing out on the arse - the denim is noticeably thinner there.

I've probably worn these about once or twice a week since I had them. They cost a lot too so I wouldn't expect this.

I want to return them and would be happy for an exchange rather than money back. The problem is I don't have the receipt and I paid in cash so have no proof of purchase.

Do you think they will exchange them without any of this? Have any of you ever returned anything to Selfridges?

Hmm
I doubt it tbh
Without any kind of proof of purhcase?

Really champagne? I'm really peed off because they were about £170 and a real treat - can't afford to replace them.

If you have no proof of purchase, I doubt it. You could have bought them anywhere. Sorry.

bigstripeytiger · 01/06/2010 22:43

If you have no proof of purchase then they have no real way of knowing when you bought them, or even that you bought them in Selfidges.
You could ask, but TBH I think that they are unlikely to refund.

scratchmyback · 01/06/2010 22:47

this is what I am thinking.....they only sell them in a couple of shops anyway but you are right, how do they know I bought them there without a receipt?

I am soooooooooooo pissed off about them now.

Hmm. If a product is faulty - i.e. 'not fit for purpose' in legal jargon - then I think a shop has a legal duty to refund, or at least exchange, even without a receipt.

However, my legal knowledge has lapsed somewhat since college, and I expect someone more qualified may come along to advise you.

Of course, it also depends on whether thinning denim on bottom area could be proved to be a defect in the product.

Maybe you could ask for advice in a Citizen's Advice Bureau??

bishboschone · 01/06/2010 22:52

If I were you I would find out the head office details and contact them . if you really haven't worn them
much then they can test them and may offer you a replacement. I personally think 7's are overated so I am not surprised.

Some info here - good point also raised about credit cards - if you paid using one you may have some extra protection...

bluecheesefiend · 01/06/2010 22:57

I had exactly the same issue with some Ernest Sewn jeans that I bought in Barneys (I live in NYC).

I took them back saying "look, if I'd bought them for $30 in KMart then it would be fair enough but these are $300 jeans and I expect far more for my money". (I didn't pay $300 as I'd got them on sale but that wasn't the point!)

They tried to tell me that it was a manufacturing issue and to take it up with Ernest Sewn directly but I just kept with the "no, I gave you my money so my arrangement is with you... you take it up with the manufacturer". In the end they gave me a credit note for the value that I'd paid (the sale price).

I did the same as you would and put the credit note towards another pair of exactly the same jeans and funnily enough, the new pair didn't wear through in the bum so it could be that your pair and my first pair were made from a particularly crappy bit of fabric.

I would advise you to try it - you don't get anywhere unless you ask!

Good luck!

I didnt pay with credit card, cash so no trace there and I also haven't got a receipt.

I had a vague recollection of not needing a receipt either if goods were faulty, but not sure if I am just imagining this is the hope they will exchange!

I am going to take them into House of Fraser today and see what they say.

Just to update, I took the jeans back to Selfridges today, told the lady I had no receipt and she told me she couldn't give me a refund but would exchange them for a new pair.

She was really good, and I was so impressed by their customer service. There are not many stores that would offer that without a receipt so I came out very happy!

Wow! I'm very pleased for you and even more pleased that selfridges do such good customer service. I shall shop there even more in future
