just had to change a top in next that was 14 for an 18! in some shops i'm a 12 top.

also in h and m tried on four pairs of trousers 12, 14, 16 and 18 and all were too small.

what's going on!

maybe i'm just fatter

I couldn't get in a size 18 top in Next- I am normally a 14-16 there. I complained to vacuous sales girl who couldn't give a toss.

HLaurens · 30/05/2010 13:47

Had the same problem in H & M recently - tried on a 16 and it was a tiny. However, I am a true 16 in Boden, Whistles, Hobbs, Kew, Joules - even in Topshop!

TrillianAstra · 30/05/2010 14:34

What do you expect the sales girl to do about sizing deaddei? She just stacks the shelves and works the tills, she doesn't design or make the stuff.

southeastastra · 30/05/2010 14:46

they can at least pass the info on to the manager surely?

i complained to the very thin boy sales assistant and he looked at me with a sympathy grin

I got a Karen Millen dress in size 12, am usually a 12 up top, bit smaller down below I tend to avoid dresses for this reason. Anyway the dress fits perfect on bum and waist but can't get me jugs in it does anyone know if I got a size 14 will me top fit and the bottom not be too baggy or am I just wasting my time and should just stick to seperates.

It's for my sisters wedding, don't usually do frocks but wanted to make a bit of an effort.

JodieO · 30/05/2010 14:48

I've found Next to be the same size as what I am recently.

IPredictADiet · 30/05/2010 14:50

what freaks me out more is when I'm different sizes in the same shop.

Last time I was in primark I came out with a size 16 vest top, and a size 12 cardi, both quite fitted styles, both fitting perfectly .

TrillianAstra · 30/05/2010 14:58

That's really annoying IPredictaDiet - fair enough for a shop to call its sizes S,M,L, or 1,2,3 or Mouse, Dog, Elephant or whatever, but not fair for two tops labelled as the same size to be different sizes.

olliepolly · 30/05/2010 18:52

Do oasis sizes come up really small.
Cant get a lovely shift dress in their biggest size to fit at all!!!!

deaddei · 30/05/2010 19:16

I expect a bit of interest, empathy- and yes, pass on comments. I was a retail manager for 15 years and hate it when staff have limited if any product knowledge- "what inside leg do your trousers go up to"- "don't know".

janeite · 30/05/2010 19:18

Sizing is crap. I have stuff in my wardrobe (it all fits) from size 8 to size 16.

bishboschone · 30/05/2010 19:19

karen millen is very small..

bishboschone · 30/05/2010 19:21

I wouldn't have thought there was much difference between 12 and 14 in K>M.

cupparooibos · 30/05/2010 19:23

It's just mass production. If you look at the labels in the clothes that show where they're made you'll sometimes find that (for e.g.) in the same store, same range, one T-shirt may have been sewn in Guatemala while another of exactly the same style but in a different colour was sewn in Malaysia.

Factories also use giant cutting tools to cut through dozens of layers of fabric at once. There are size variations caused by fabric shifting or being closer to the bottom or top of the piles.

TakeLovingChances · 30/05/2010 20:42

I tried on a dress recently, a size 12 - couldn't get the zip up at all.

Went to a different shop, saw a lovely dress, rack said size 14. Tried dress on and it fitted perfectly. Later on when I bought it and took it home I looked at the internal label and it is a size 10!

So hard to guess what sizes will fit, impossible for anyone else to buy clothes for someone else.
