Help me find a wedding dress - non trad. ?

Hello,

I posted on chat yesterday as I was in a hurry before a trip into London to find a dress. I have looked in the bridal shops and I can't stand the dresses there. Even the beautiful ones make me feel stiff and as if I'm wearing fancy dress.

I would love to find a beautiful dress for an August wedding. I am about a size 12, olive skin and dark hair, 5'5, about a D cup. My shoes will make me around 5'11.

I would really appreciate links to beautiful dresses, and tips on where to shop - though I've already been recommended Browns, Matches, and the big London department stores.

I am coming round to the idea of a short, white dress, but ideally I would like something ballgown-y or evening dress style.

Any suggestions or tips for what I should look for would be appreciated!

Ooh, they are cool. Am I being stupid - where does one buy them?

What about Coast? I went to a wedding at the w/e where the bride was wearing Coast and she looked lovely. Quite drapey style - completely disguised her 14-wk pregnancy bump (my husband was dumbfounded when he saw her in town today in her "civvies"!) And you can spend on something else the money you save.

She wore this

I also like this one

and this is cute

You can get nice little bolero jackets to go with. I suppose only thing is the danger one of your guests might be wearing the same item ...!

Am so jealous! I'm getting married next week and it's just me and DP, so can't really go overboard on a dress. DP is wearing knee-length shorts and DMs, if that gives you an idea of the dress code! Am really depressed with what I'm wearing, which is [http://www.east.co.uk/p/New%20tops/ss101022015WHITE.htm this] with a black tiered skirt. Wish I could wear something fabulous, but it's just not to be [sigh]. Hope you find something gorgeous x

Surprise hey - don't be sad

Prob too late, but if you haven't found anything yet, I too am a size 12 with D-cup breasts (or was before I got pregnant ) and bought a peacock green Moschino cocktail dress from Harvey Nicks for my wedding last year -- very Joan Holloway from Mad Men. I trekked all over London and found that Harvey Nicks had the best selection of stuff I liked. Felt like a million quid on the day, and SO glad I didn't wear a traditional dress.

I'm getting married this august, and my dress is a 50's style justin alexander tea length dress. The photo is actually a coffee/natural colourway I have ordered the ivory but it is quite a dark ivory (if that makes sense!)www.justinalexanderbridal.com/en_eu/8465.html

UnrequitedSkink · 30/05/2010 23:17

Oh wow - toinfinity, I LOVE your dress. Do you have a teeny waist or does it just give you one?

almondfinger · 30/05/2010 23:44

Toinfinity, amazing dress!!!

JaneS · 31/05/2010 11:28

Oops, sorry ladies, I lost sight of this thread somehow.

Surprise, congratulations! You'll look lovely and I am (in my turn), pretty jealous of you - just the two of you will be so romantic, lovely. Hope it goes well!

I didn't find the dress when I went shopping and have done some browsing on Net-a-Porter (and got distracted by a gorgeous mini-dress which I have ordered ).

I am still looking and pondering so thanks so much everyone for all the suggestions.
