I am ridiculous, but: toddler girls in skirts

I cannot make this look work. All skirts on my 18 mo old are sticky-out because of the nappy, and on me that would mean a short (waistlength) fitted top but most little girl's tops tend to be baby doll or baggy or too long, and then what length should the skirts be?

I know this is ridiculous and who cares, she's just a toddler, but I bought some nice skirts when she was still crawling in anticipation of her walking, and now she is and they all look stupid.

Can someone point me to pictures of toddlers in skirts? Bonus points if they're winter outfits. Very few of the clothing brands around here do skirts for this age group, and the one that does doesn't show pictures of put together outfits, just individual clothing items.

It's easier in summer when they can wear t-shirts with them. To be honest, my DD (now 2.8) still doesn't wear skirts much - we tend to go for dresses or leggings.

I did get quite a lot of long-sleeved t-shirts from Next when DD was younger and they're fine with skirts. Mine hates tights though so she wore skirts over leggings this winter.

TBH even now (aged 7yrs) my dd does't look great in skirts because the waists tend to be bulky and then her tops which are longer than waist length sort of bunch up over them.

Dresses are the way forward.

In winter shorts (denim, cord etc, obviously not summer ones) with funky tights underneath can look very cute too.

BDSM, so just a plain longsleeved T? I'm assuming mine will wear leggings with her skirts too, less of a PITA than tights if you ask me. It's the tops that baffle me.

DriedFRog, yes, that's exactly what I mean, about the tops.

I have an entire winter wardrobe for her and no winterweight dresses, just skirts that look stupid and I can't really justify buying more clothes.

Gap usually do nice long sleeve tops that would work with skirts.

MaineGirl · 27/05/2010 10:00

you need the multi packs of plain tops, most supermarkets do them and shops such as next, gap etc.
my dd never wore skirts at that age as she ahd the same problem further exaggerated by cloth nappies we used. so it was dresses and tights all the way. my dd2 who's 9 months is much more of a legging type girl, she just seems more of a tomboy and less girly girly than my dd1.

Yes we're cloth nappy people

I feel a bit better knowing that it's not just me. I'll stick to the jeans and cute tops this year, I think.

I've got some very nice dungaree style dresses that look good - wintry too with a long sleeved top underneath. Skirts dont work for us either really. Tho I have seen a little girl in a kilt type one that worked well because its flat fronted - and warm too.

BelleDameSansMerci · 27/05/2010 18:31

tortoise, yes I just went for plain tops or, if the top was patterned, a plain skirt. To be honest, though, it was always a bit hit and miss. I bought her some of those tutu like skirts that I hoped she'd wear with chunky boots and tights but the first time I tried to get her into one she had her first and worst tantrum...

A fitted long sleeved t-shirt looks great over a sticking out skirt, tights and Mary Janes.

MayorNaze · 27/05/2010 18:37

h&m do good longsleevd decent length tshirts. am a former clothie here and found flared skirts worked well over lovely big cloth bums

Leedsmumof1 · 27/05/2010 21:32

How about a long sleeved bodysuit under the skirt, and then a cardigan over the top if she needs more warmth?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 27/05/2010 21:33

Hanna Anderson.

Oooh, Leeds, that's a good idea (although I had hoped to get away from bodysuits by now, all those poppers).

Thanks for brand reccs, but I'm really not able to justify a lot more purchases this year - she's got a million winter clothes, I just need to work out how to put them together properly.
