"natural" hair dye experiences please

Having just looked on home hair dye thread, but not keen to trawl through hundred odd posts to look for natural ones, I wonder if anyone could post their experiences with natural hair dyes.
For me (actual hair colour dark brown with grey increasing!)

  1. henna with some addition of indigo: prob best I've found longer term though the grey bits look noticeably lighter than the rest, the indigo tones down that orange-on-the-grey effect. Lovely shine and good for condition. So messy and time consuming to apply though.
  2. Daniel Field watercolour. Good grey coverage (totally gone!) with "maple" but started to wash out after 2 or 3 washes. Much easier to apply though.
  3. Aubrey Organics - messy to apply and didn't cover grey at all.

Any more....?

I used to use Body Shop dark brown henna, which was great, covered all my geys, but they were definitely redder than rest of hair.

A good tip I found on a henna website once was to add an egg to mixture, for shine and ease of application.

I stopped doing it with henna, because I found it impossible to find the time to do it with 2 los.

I really fancy trying henna, but it sounds a bit hit and miss which is putting me off.

How long do you leave the daniel field one on for? I have left it on for 2 hours and seem to get a better result that way.....

LovelyDear · 25/05/2010 22:45

i leave daniel field on for about an hour and use a darkish colour and it lasts a couple of months before i feel an urgent need to do it again. however i THINK my grey is concentrated in one area, so i might be kidding myself...

I find Lush henna great at covering my few greys and makes hair very shiny. Seems to get darker after a few weeks strangely.

Don't find it too messy now hair is shorter than shoulder length.

Thanks for replies.
hazeyjane - I might try an egg next time. I know what you mean about finding the time though, hence me looking for alternatives!
paisleyleaf - www.renaissancehenna.com and www.hennaforhair.com give lots of good advice/info about henna. I've used renaissancehenna stuff before and it has worked well. The website shows examples of finished colour on different actual hair colours - although i'm sure there is a lot of variation in outcomes so i suppose the only way to know is to try it! If it comes out too red though, you can always tone it down with indigo (if your hair is dark - I think there is something else you can use if your hair is naturally lighter, info on the website.)
rightsaidfred - I think I only left it on for at most an hour, so might try longer. I wonder if repeat applications would build up and last longer too. I did really like the Daniel Field colour and it was nice and easy to wash out.... compared to henna gunk.
One tip I did find on the Daniel Field site is that their "radiant" colours are not so good for colouring grey - I had used a radiant one the first time and it was certainly true - much better result the next time with the not-radiant one.

bananabrain, I know - I have looked at that renaissance website. A lot. Maybe I'll take the plunge over the summer holidays.
