I can't wear skirts or dresses any more. Why?

This has crept up on me. I used to be a skirts and dresses person but gradually have become a jeans person...I don't know why, but suddenly looking at all these gorgeous, unworn frocks in my wardrobe I am almost physically repulsed by the idea of putting one on.

There is something going on and I don't understand it - I am 36, slim, tallish, and finally have the long hair I feel goes best with that feminine look, but just can't bring myself to do it.

What is wrong with me? Am I going to have to give them all away?

Oh phew

I knew there would be more of us!

It is so strange how it has crept up. I used to wear nothing but skirts and frocks, was not a trouser person at all, but I have changed I think. I also feel self conscious in decorative stuff (whippet - you are me! aren't you!)

I love flowers too Ellie. But as you say not on my clothes.

I realised the other day how much I just want to live in work clothes, you know, overalls or jeans or jodhpurs (despite not having a horse) and I have been wearing my leather riding boots all summer till last week when I switched to (eek!) heavy DM sandals, which obviously most men hate (or so I have been told)

I miss my boots, I feel safe in them.
I used to wear bike boots but rarely ride the bike now so horsey boots are it.

I just feel fraudulent, as you say Hully, like I am pretending to be something or other. Which is odd when I wear horse boots can can't ride a horse! They are just so practical.

I feel a bit guilty having these dresses now, had better not buy any more...they are pretty to look at but I don't see myself wearing them.

captNancy - did you mean you#ve seen me wearing a dress on previous profile? That must have been my maternity dress! LOL but thankyou for saying nice things

My OH is really thankful/grateful if I wear a dress or skirt - (though I very rarely do). He's always commenting on how lovely it is to see my legs too - though I prefer to keep them hidden.

You reminded me of this song...

FWIW, I'm none too fond of dresses myself

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 25/05/2010 14:24

Excellent lyrics!

There is no way you were pg! Your waist was miniscule!
it was a v 50s style nipped-in waist, full skirt, colorful print, maybe on white... you were taking the pic in the mirror... (this is my near photographic memory... not stalkerish I promise!

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 07:33

That wasn't me! LOL

I haven't owned such a thing since I was about 18...I do have a smallish waist though. How funny

I wonder now who it was you are thinking of! I've never put a full length pic of myself on here.

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 07:34

the maternity pic was in the mirror but only down to about belly button.

Hmm... I think it may have been under your pp persona, not sure. I was admiring the pics of you interiors too- loads of books, v nice.

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 12:23

PP?
!
Nancy have you got me mixed up with someone else? I have had loads of names but don't remember a PP.

OP posts:
AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 12:24

but thankyou all the same, for the lovely compliments!

P u s....
This is FA I'm talking to isn't it?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/05/2010 17:02

I understand what you mean. I don't like wearing high heels for the same reason.

A) it feels like dressing up
b) i do feel a little vulnerable

Plus, skirts require extra effort and decisions about length, tights, depilation and shoes

I also wonder about your age and stage of life. I went through a major clothes wobble after the births of my DCs. Felt old and had no idea what I should be wearing now - came to the sudden realisation I could not do pass for 23 any more

But! following on from a little thread of hully's, and a trip to Monsoon with some gift vouchers. I have bought some dresses, and am wearing my skirts. The trick for me was to start getting my legs and feet looking better. I am newly-converted .....

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/05/2010 17:04

Yes, my DH likes to see me in dresses/skirts too. It reminds him of the 18 year old who used to wear "flippy skirts"

(that was me, BTW)

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 20:13

yes have just shaved my legs and I did put ON a dress, yesterday, but legs looked terrible and white and I did feel uncomfortable. I had to change back into trousers after about 10 minutes.

Nancy I know who you mean now, and yes, you're right - can't remember the skirt photo still, but PP was me! Sorry. Do you have a spreadsheet or something? You know who I was better than I do!

Get some of that moisturiser-with-fake-tan-in stuff. It build up gradually, but fairly quickly, and is pretty non-smeary. I challenge you to have worse legs than me for paleness and hairiness (an attractive proposition)

Jamieandhismagictorch · 26/05/2010 20:24

meant streaky, not smeary

CaptainNancy · 26/05/2010 20:30

rofl... I am blessed cursed with near photographic memory, and I have an obsession affinity with names

On the back of this thread, I have dug out a dress to wear to work tomorrw... it is cool enough now to wear tights, so won't feel so naked (maybe) or pasty.

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 20:39

Jamie, lolling at your challenge I might try fake tan then. I have never been inspired to before!

and Nancy, if only you knew how immensely my powers of memory had diminished since having kids...i wonder if it's just that now I can't be bothered iyswim? But in the old days I knew all my schoolfriends' middle names, car number plates, birthdays...I could still tell you a good few of them.

So I get where you're coming from! You're not a freak...or maybe we both are.

Can you still recite your school register, too?

I think I can. Hearing it every day for 7 years though...not surprising!

OP posts:
CaptainNancy · 26/05/2010 20:51

Um yes... secondary and primary...

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 26/05/2010 21:04

have started a thread.
I'm just hoping there is a chance someone will know someone from their old class...you never know!

I can't remember my primary one though. All far too traumatic I think.

I love dresses and jeans- but I just cannot wear jeans in the scorching heat.

AtlantisLegoDuplicates · 27/05/2010 20:07

I know...it does get too hot sometimes. Well today I had a breakthrough, was hunting around for a short cord skirt and found some shorts. I had tights on so put them on instead of skirt...with wellies...does it look OK or is this much too silly for a 36yo?

Please be honest I do not wish to give out the wrong signals! pic on prof for a little while.
