Brunette, grey hair, lowlights or highligts - Help!

I am brunette, but starting to go grey. I love my brown hair and don't want to cover it with one colour, so I thought about either having highlights or lowlights put in it just to blend in some of the grey. Will this work?

I have very long hair, way past shoulder length, would I need to cut it shorter to highlight/lowlight it?

Am I right that they should be done on foils, not using a cap to pull them through? I have teenage memories of helping friends to "highlight" their hair using an old shower cap!!

I am a complete colour virgin, apart from using Clairols "Glints" many years ago.... before I started going grey, ironically!

I am brunette and have both in, a coppery tone and a blonder tone, both subtle, but blend the grey. My hairdresser uses foils

Thanks duckyfuzz, that sounds like the kind of thing I am thinking of!

Do you get problems with roots/regrowth showing through? I imagine that it would not be so obvious with highlights/lowlights.
