Teens and 'wash in, wash out' hair colouring

DD is just 13 and wants to try one of those semi permanent hair colours, and all I can think is that it will be a disaster!

She is a very busy club swimmer and her hair already has a hard life ( even though she only ever swims in a hat ) but she always gets naturally blonde streaks in the summer, partly because I think her hair is so porous from all that chlorine.

She asked for highlights, I said no, because she is just 13.

All our friend's DDs who have tried these colourings have had disasters from going greenish, to going almost black and goth like! One friend's DD had used that sun in and that was awful apparently. In addition to all the aesthetic issues, there is of course the worry of allergic reactions.

Is there a compromise?

Perhaps she could try toners/shaders? they don't last long, but that's a good thing in case it goes wrong.

My 13yr old has been dying her hair on and off for the last two years (including shocking pink at the beginning of the summer holidays ).

None of the colours were permanent, or weren't supposed to be, except for the black henna, which ended up snot green in the end. I ended up having to pay a bloomin' fortune to have it all heavily streaked in the end to try and make it look 'normal'

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2010 16:43

I have to say at her age I was using hydrogen peroxide from the chemist, but am soooo not telling her that!

Thanks - I may look at the toners ones, not sure if she is a toner or a shader!!

Could she just dye some streaks of hair, rather than her whole head? That would be more similar to highlights too.

If she does the allergy test before she uses the dye she should be fine.

I found my hair seemed in better condition after I'd used a semi-permanent dye. I think the range was called stargazer - it was pillar box red!

Maybe this is something to try at the beginning of the summer holidays

at that age i used to use wella colour mousse, don't know if they still make it..

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2010 16:48

Ruddy - is that something you put in and it lasts until you wash it out?

6-8 washes as i recall.

though we used to leave the stuff on for hours and hours and hours so it would last longer

a quick google suggests they still sell it.

Ah, toners and Shaders. Many a morning I spent in Share chemists deciding between Plum Whisper or Mahogany Delight

MamaG · 15/05/2010 17:45

I used to use that stuff taht came in triangular boxes

I died it pink accidetnally 2 weeks before i was a bridesmaid for my cousin

she was NOT happy

cyb · 15/05/2010 17:46

yeah what WAS that stuff. I used the blue/black one...

Avad · 15/05/2010 17:52

Just comes in sachets now, I miss those triangular boxes. Superdrug do a version in a tube that has much more in than the sachets for 99p.

MamaG · 15/05/2010 18:04

oh God
I put DIED not dyed

TrillianAstra · 15/05/2010 18:05

Let her do it - it will turn out awful - she will have crap coloured hair for a while and so (maybe) not want to do it again.

Rules:
a) has to be stuff that was sold for hair (not neat hydrogen peroxide!)
b) not permanent
c) she cleans the bathroom of every trace of the stuff

IME toners and shaders do bugger all, but that might be because my hair is quite dark. That colour mousse works.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 15/05/2010 18:24

I will let her do it but possibly not just before she is a bridesmaid to SIL!!

She is a shader rather than a toner. I do remmber those little sachets!!

I once dyed my hair completely blonde with Sun-In. That takes dedication when your hair is dark brown!

jasmine1979 · 15/05/2010 18:32

I was also a fan of the shaders and toners sachets. They were great for dark hair, but can't remember if they also do lighter ones.
Wasn't the dye n a triangular box called "Harmony"?
