I am barely 8 weeks pregnant with my second babe and already have a bit of a bump...I really don't feel ready to share with the world (m/c previously) but am thinking people are going to guess quite soon. Young chap behind the counter at M&S congratulated me today...

I'm 27, 5' 8", prob a size 14/16 these days and am flummoxed. DD is 10 months and never really lost a little 'belly' from last years preg but this is ridiculous!

Please, please help, kindly, wise MN'ers!! How do I hide the bump?

(Oh, am also still bf so not wild on very faffy dresses)

Hi congrats on the baby hun, linen trousers are good and also there are quite a lot of smock/loose tops in fashion now so you have a good excuse to wear loose tops now without anyone being sus.

What do you normally wear?

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 14/05/2010 21:58

Walk around with a doughnut in each hand at all times and then people might just think you have gained weight through bad diet and be too polite to say anything

stressheaderic · 14/05/2010 22:13

Loose jersey top with bubble hem, and possibly pockets, should do the trick, worked for me (unless people were just too polite to say)

VerityBrulee · 14/05/2010 22:16

A blazer type jacket, there are a lot of jersey ones around at the moment which are very comfortable, left open and one of those lightweight scarves that are everywhere, wrap it once around your neck then leave the ends loose and they will disguise your waist.

You could wear that over tunics and jeans/leggings, linen trousers or a dress and look lovely.

Congratulations on the baby

Cyd4 · 15/05/2010 19:31

Thanks for the congratulations!

Some good suggestions there, thank you. Will def try on some linen trousers. Generally wear tunic/leggings type thing anyway, but my bump does pop out a bit with some of them.

Love the blazer type jacket suggestion - anyone have any suggestions where to look for a decent one?

Eternally grateful, feel a total frump x

H&M have got lots of pretty empire line blouses in at the moment - I looked at one today and thought - perfect first trimester top .

Agree with VB regarding jersey blazers - next had some and zara.

SuSylvester · 15/05/2010 19:57

do what cindy beale did and carry a bag in front of you for years

MarineIguana · 15/05/2010 20:03

I was looking at some things in Dorothy P the other day that might work for this, for example

this and this

kittya · 16/05/2010 01:32

Im not so struck on the colour of the second one, looks abit casual, but I think it depends on the occasion. You have a baby surely you can pass it off as just not being addicted to getting back to your previous weight!! My hairdresser is also pregnant, she is due four weeks after her dd's first birthday and when I saw her yesterday I just thought thank goodness she isnt subscribing to the celebs who act as if its normal to weigh less after the birth within 8 weeks! Turns out she 4 months preggers but I would never have assumed she was! I wouldnt be that rude.

AWellHungParliament · 16/05/2010 02:24

Bloody hell, 8 weeks and you are showing? Are you sure you are not further along?

Just start wearing clothes a size too small and people will think it is muffintop?

Wear empire line tops and baby doll dresses and emphasise stuff your bust so attention is drawn away from tum?
Along those lines, statement necklaces?

Oh I'm sorry, am a bit crap and have had two glasses of wine.

Congratulations on the pregnancy btw.

BooKangaWonders · 16/05/2010 06:55

with dc 2 I was in maternity trousers from 6 weeks! (when my body knows where it's going, it just gets there fast!) I used to wear skirts that looked ok from the front, but would leave the button undone and have a longer top. Lots of layers would work, esp if you're b/f.

But I think the man in M&S might need a lesson in customer relations! Maybe a note to HR suggesting that no comments are in order until a customer is in labour...

darkandstormy · 16/05/2010 11:04

Anything empire line, and skimming without being voluminous.

MumtoF · 16/05/2010 19:51

Bubble hems work, as does anything that hangs from the bust. I actually found higher waisted tight skirts worked well if you want something formal as people just assume it is an unflattering skirt rather than you are trying to hide something. Black is good especially a cardigan on top of a black top as a bagging cardigan at the sides sort of flops out and means the bump doesn't show. I think most people are in their own world so won't notice so the main thing is not to draw attention to yourself by wearing anything different style wise to what you normally wear. Plus do something unusual with your hair or wear a necklace so people look there rather than at your waist.

Cyd4 · 17/05/2010 08:04

Thanks chaps- off to the shops today (esp DP - thanks Marine Iguana).

Empire line just makes me look massively pregnant but will enjoy wearing them in a few weeks time!

AWelllHungParliament - alas, I am just a fatty then....Good tip about the statement necklaces. Might just go a bit bananas with make up too...

Yes, kid in M&S clearly needs lessons in manners. Surely you don't say anything in unless i is basically falling out...?

AWellHungParliament · 18/05/2010 00:09

Noooooo! I didn't mean you were a fatty, just that you could disguise a pg bump by Oh bollocks, I'm going to quit while I'm not even ahead.
Sorry, I didn't mean to be insulting.

cece · 18/05/2010 00:22

at showing at 8 weeks. Imanaged to hide DC3 bump from the world till I was 24 weeks! But I did have the advantage of winter coats...

ShowOfHands · 18/05/2010 00:31

I was showing by 7 weeks with my first. Was usually a slim and toned size 8/10. By 10 weeks people were congratulating me. It was ridiculous. Slowed down at 16 weeks and bump stayed the same until around 26 weeks when it went mad again.

I wore a lot of wrap dresses and blazers to disguise it.

EssieAmma · 18/05/2010 10:09

I agree - empire line. I wear a lot of them. And every day when I wear one to work, my boss does a cartoon double-take, and then spends meetings eyeing up my stomach with half-closed eyes.
I'm not pregnant.
