my 30th birthday party at the start of July!

I always seem to get it really wrong shapewise and I look back at pictures and cringe.

Im usually a 14, have a funny bit on my stomach like an overhang after 1st child (c section. I really want a dress that covers the lumps and bumps I have but im really stuck!

What do you think of these?

Oh,

these dresses a wee bit out of my price range so something cheaper but similar if possible!

OP posts:
cyb · 12/05/2010 21:25

ok well the first one looks lke fancy dress and the second one looks like a nightie gone grey in the wash

So lets start again

What shape do you want? 50's ish? More modern and drapey? those ones are veh flattering on a tum...

And dont forget the holy grail of control pants

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:27

Hello,

thank you so much for your honesty. I like the idea of a 50's style dress but am open to suggestions!

OP posts:
herjazz · 12/05/2010 21:30

think maybe the 1st dress would work better with birrova gut

am not mad keen on the print though. looks more weddingy than big birthday bash if that makes any sense

dolly dagger stocks that stop staring range (think its got more of the slinky ones tho) Good selection of prom style ones if you are liking that style - cheaper than yr links

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:36

Oooh,

there are some lovely ones in there, thank you for that link.

OP posts:
cyb · 12/05/2010 21:40

oh thansk for thinking I am honest, some would say rude!

you are going to be 30, I think you can go a bit more cutting edge, non? or are you a 50's chick?

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:44

Oh no,

im your bog standard jean and trainer wearing person. No particular style if you see what I mean. More cutting edge would be fine however I have no idea where to look or what would suit!

OP posts:
tulpe · 12/05/2010 21:44

girly would you consider a maxi dress (yes, I know very far removed from 50's chic )

I have a rather crepey/draped tummy following pregnancies and always seek outfits which avoid drawing attention to that area.

I bought this today and it is gorgeous and drapes so beautifully that it doesn't cling anywhere.

cyb · 12/05/2010 21:46

how tall are you? colouring?

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:50

I would consider a maxi dress. I like the style of that one too.

OP posts:
girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:51

Im about 5 foot 6 and have blonde/light brown hair, and I am very pale...Scottish you see, no sunlight lol.

OP posts:
cyb · 12/05/2010 21:53

this might be totally out of your comfort zone but this and some killer black heels would look fab I reckon. flattering shape too

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 21:56

Hmm,

not too sure about that one, its the animal print I dont like, sorry.

Maybe I should be less fussy!

OP posts:
cyb · 12/05/2010 22:01

no not fussy at all, I'm just trying to gauge how 'out there' you want to go!

tulpe · 12/05/2010 22:02

I've seen this one in store and it is lovely.

cyb · 12/05/2010 22:03

have a look on here, every type of dress known to man and you can really refine your search

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 22:03

This is where I struggle. I dont have much of an imagination!

I like this www.newlook.com/shop/womens/dresses/bow-back-cotton-dress_189416801?icSort=-bestSellerScore

but its a wee bit boring and perhaps a bit to young if you see what I mean.

OP posts:
AngryPixie · 12/05/2010 22:06

can't go wrong with Vivien

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 22:09

I quite like this one

www.asos.com/French-Connection/French-Connection-Cut-Out-Front-Printed-Mini-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.as px?iid=1070402&cid=8857&Rf-200=4,8,1&Rf-800=70.000,-1&sh=0&pge=2&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Black

OP posts:
cyb · 12/05/2010 22:11

yes that is more modern. i find all the 50's prom ones very dated and safe now.

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 22:14

Ive never been on ASOS before. Thats a whole new world of clothing!

I like those vivien dresses as well, however dh is not so keen, not that im about to start listening to him!

OP posts:
BattyKoda · 12/05/2010 22:16

dress&sh=0&pge=2&pgesize=20&sort=-1&clr=Mauve This is a bit special, and a massive bargain. The teal colour is nice.

BattyKoda · 12/05/2010 22:18

I think the 50's style dresses are better suited to shorter women?

I think at 5'6" a maxi dress would be the way to go...

monkeysavingexpertdotcom · 12/05/2010 22:19

blue?

girlylala0807 · 12/05/2010 22:21

BattyKoda

I love that dress, im just wondering if it will survive a night out north of the boarder!
